Mystery Illness Strikes Philly Women
RUSH: "It's a mysterious, newly discovered disease that strikes mainly young women, and it's often misdiagnosed. Doctors who discovered it, here in Philadelphia, say it's like your brain is on fire. Channel 3 On Your Side Health Reporter Stephanie Stahl says it starts with personality changes." So if you're in Philadelphia and you know a woman, and her personality is changing, the odds are it is this mysterious newly discovered disease.
It strikes mainly young women and makes 'em think their brain is on fire. (interruption) Well, because it starts with personality changes. That's how you tell. (interruption) That's a sexist thing to say! Don't say that! That's a sexist thing to say. Snerdley just said that women's personalities change on their own anyway without mysterious deadly diseases. That's the typical sexism that you get from the right wing these days
You need to learn to channel that, Snerdley. Here's what happens: "Young women dazed, restrained in hospital beds, acting possessed and then becoming catatonic. They'd been so normal, when suddenly their lives went haywire. 'One minute I'd be sobbing, crying hysterically, and the next minute I'd be laughing, said Susannah Cahalan, of New Jersey. 'I was very paranoid and manic.
"There was something wrong. I thought trucks were following me,' said Emily Gavigan, of Pennsylvania. And it got worse for Emily Gavigan, who was a sophomore at the University of Scranton. Hospitalized, and out of it, she couldn't control her arm movements. Then there were seizures, and she needed a ventilator. Her parents were watching their only child slip away," and they are very fortunate they did not have to get to the hospital through the snowstorm because it isn't snowing in Philadelphia.
It's only raining.
"'We were losing her. This is something that I couldn't control,' said Bill Gavigan, Emily's dad. Doctors also couldn't figure out what was wrong with Susannah. 'I had bizarre abnormal movements, would leave my arms out extended, you know, in front of me. I was a relatively normal person, then the next minute I'm hallucinating and insisting that my father had kidnapped me,' said Susannah. Turns out, Susannah and Emily weren't mentally ill.
"They both had an auto immune disease called Anti-NMDA Receptor Encephalitis, when antibodies attack the brain, causing swelling. Susannah says this is how doctors explained it to her parents, 'He told them her brain is on fire. He used those words: 'Her brain is on fire,'" and they have to put the fire out with medicine. So that is the mysterious disease discovered locally in Philadelphia.
Conservatives Cause Stress
RUSH: Another story from CBS Philadelphia: "A new survey released Thursday says young adults, between 18 and 33-years-old, are more stressed than any other generation. USA Today says the online survey was conducted in August 2012 by Harris Interactive for the American Psychological Association and was taken by 2,020 US adults (18 and older). Results of the survey say the average stress level of adults in 2012 was 4.9 on a 10-point scale..."
In other words: Young adults between 18 and 33 are more stressed today than any generation ever, in history, and it's in USA Today. (interruption) That's including any generation. It's including The Greatest Generation, including the Neanderthals. (interruption) Well, "What's causing this?" What's causing this is the Republican Party. What else would be causing this? What's causing this is partisanship, the Republican Party's refusal to compromise with Obama and get along, and the War on Women.
What do you think is causing this stress? (interruption) Loafing? (interruption) No, no. (interruption) None of that. None of that. (interruption) No, no. No, no. No, no. (interruption) None of that. Not loafing. Not staying at home with the parents and not working. Not feeling entitled and not feeling achieved or not feeling accomplished. That's none of it. That has nothing to do with it. These people are stressed because of the opposition to government that exists, which threatens them, Snerdley.
When people oppose government, their livelihoods are threatened! When people oppose government, their future is uncertain. That's what's causing... (interruption) That's what's causing this. (interruption) Of course they don't work! They might have to; that's the stress! They might have to get a job. They might have to leave home. They might actually have to go provide for themselves. That's the reason for the stress, and the reason that might happen is 'cause there are people who oppose Obama's policies of expanding the government.
I knew that without even reading the story.
I knew that was gonna be the explanation.
Three Parents Listed in Miami Adoption
RUSH: "A Miami-Dade circuit judge has approved a private adoption allowing three people -- a gay man and a married lesbian couple -- to be listed on the birth certificate of their 23-month-old daughter. 'We're creating entirely new concepts of families. If you have two women seeking to be listed as Parent One and Parent Two, that does not exclude listing a man as father,' said Miami family lawyer Karyn J. Begin, who represented dad Massimiliano 'Massimo' Gerina in a two-year paternity case involving lesbian friends who had his baby. ...
"'There are three parties involved. I agree that makes the case unique,' Kaplan said Thursday." I just remember how I have been mocked and ridiculed and made fun of for even mentioning that these kinds of things were gonna happen. I remember being laughed at and mocked, and being called an extremist for predicting that definitions of family -- what constitutes family -- is now wide open and pretty sure you're gonna be able to marry your dog.
Your dog is gonna be an official member of the family that qualifies for benefits. People laughed and made fun of me, and here we go. A Miami-Dade circuit judge okays a plan for a gay guy and a lesbian couple to be on a daughter's birth certificate, even though one of the lesbians had nothing to do with it. Maybe both of the lesbians had nothing to do with it. It could be that there's a fourth involved, a surrogate. Wait 'til the surrogate hears about this!
Obama Approval Falls
RUSH: Anyway, folks, Obama's approval numbers (according to Quinnipiac) have plummeted. He's down to 46/45 job approval, according to the Quinnipiac University poll. That's down from 53-40 in December.
