RUSH: Gabriel in Riverside, California.  I’m glad you waited.  Open Line Friday.  You’re next.  Welcome, sir.

CALLER:  Thank you very much for taking my call, Maha Rushie.

RUSH: You bet.

CALLER: I have a question.  You made a statement a couple of shows back that if the offer was given to you to advise Trump on some matters, that you would take it.  We definitely need your help.  Like (chuckles), “Obi-Rush Kenobi, we need your help.”

RUSH: (chuckles) “Obi-Rush Kenobi.”  I didn’t mean it in an official way in terms of becoming an advisor.  I think somebody asked me if I was advising Trump, and I said no.  All I meant was if somebody called here, I would answer; I would talk to them. But that doesn’t happen. I don’t… It’d be presumptuous as hell to reach out.  They have people who know what all of us in the media happen to be saying.  So they can use it or not, pick up the phone or not.

I’m like everybody else.  I know people that know Trump very well.  I know Trump somewhat.  I can call him and ask him, “You want to go play golf? Do you have any time in the next two weeks?” I could do that.  But it’s not a close relationship like Rudy Giuliani has with him.  But it’s friendly, it’s mutual respect, and it’s good.  What I hear from people who are around him every day is that Donald Trump is Donald Trump, and he doesn’t sit around taking advice.

He’s got advisors.  But one of the rubs is, he’s got it in his head how he’s going to do this. It’s not an ego thing about not taking advice, and it’s not that he’s obstinate. It’s just that he’s confident and thinks he knows what he knows and what he wants to say and so forth.  I just sit here like everybody else does and watch it and analyze it.  One of the things that I have observed…  I may have to revise this, by the way, is the reason I’m bringing this up.

I was talking to somebody the other day who does communicate with Trump regularly, who asked me, “If Trump were sitting here with us, what would you tell him?” I basically said what I repeated on the air the other day.  I said, “Somehow somebody has to get through to him and see if it’s possible that he can begin to see people like Hillary Clinton in an ideological way,” meaning understand that, as a liberal — or progressive or leftist or whatever — that’s where she’s destructive.  That’s where she’s dangerous.

What she wants to do and how they go about doing it and how he’s going to be attacked, how they’re going to do it? If he had a basic foundational level of understanding of that, then he would know in advance how they’re going to come after him, because it’s easily predictable what they’re going to do.  And you can at least be prepared for it and have a retaliatory strategy if you want one, and the person I was talking to said, “Oh, okay.  That makes sense.”

I’m wondering now. That may not be the way to go.  I’m looking at the electorate.  There’s a story here — and granted this is about Millennials.  “Most Young Americans Say Parties Do Not Represent Them.”  Now, this is an AP story.  We take all this Drive-By stuff with a grain of salt at the get-go, and then we delve into it see if it has any merit.  It’s from GenForward, which is a polling. Do you realize how much of the daily news people consume today actually is nothing but polling data?  And it is increasing!

And there are polls nobody’s ever heard of that are popping up, and it doesn’t matter.  Every poll is given the weight of authority just like any poll is, and we don’t know who they are.  In this particular poll: “Most young Americans say the Republican and Democratic parties don’t represent them, a critical data point after a year of ferocious presidential primaries that forced partisans on both sides to confront what — and whom — they stand for.

“That’s according to a new GenForward poll that shows the disconnect holds true across racial and ethnic groups, with just 28% of young adults overall saying the two major parties do a good job of representing the American people.”   Now, it’s not just this poll.  The reason for my maybe withdrawing that advice with the full force of 100% advocacy is only because this… I heard Huckabee say something the other day on TV that made me stop and think.

All of this is, “How do you reach the electorate?” All of this is based on, “How do you reach the electorate?” The Drive-Bys reach the majority of the electorate.  The Drive-Bys shape the news every day, and the Drive-Bys shape what most Americans know.  Like I was talking to a guy about this hostage story.  He’s one of us, and he was pulling his hair out.  This is a story that’s got him dead to rights.  It’s like Charles Krauthammer said: You have a CEO do this and he’s in jail in ten days, ten hours.

My friend said, “Why are the American people not reacting? They don’t seem to be bothered by it.  There’s no reaction!”  It’s not that they’re not bothered.  They don’t know.  In your circle, in your world, it’s reported that Obama paid ransom.  It’s not that on CNN.  The New York Times is not saying that — and the New York Times feeds Yahoo! and feeds Facebook.  By the way, Google? You want to throw in there? Google may as well have an office on the West Wing.

Google is the media monopoly that ABC, CBS and NBC used to have in the 1970s, 1980s. If you want to research anything, you go to Google; you put the search term in.  You have to go to page 5 before you find a conservative reference point on whatever it is you’re researching.  So Google has given the Democrats, has given the left, their media monopoly in that regard.  He who controls the search engine, and then he who controls what’s reported…

So if most Americans are not looking at this as a left-versus-right election, but instead insider versus outsider or disruptive versus status quo? Then maybe identifying Hillary as the leftist, liberal (pfft!) whatever she is? Maybe that’s not the way to reach some of the electorate today.  Millennials may not have the slightest interest in it, for example.  I’m still thinking about this.  It’s a lot to analyze and figure out.  But the objective is how to reach people, and then once you figure that out, how do you reach them? How do you tailor the message? Because it’s going to be in direct contradiction to what they’re hearing everywhere else they get news.
