Rush Receives Flag from Operation Iraqi Freedom
April 30, 2003

Towards the tail end of Wednesday's show, I received an emotional e-mail from Marta. Our mail delivery included an amazing gift: an American flag flown on five different missions - exactly as it is pictured here - in this taped Ziplock bag. I have received five plaques explaining each mission's significance.

I’ve never been more honored and humbled. The package included the names of all the Air Force pilots who displayed this flag - which I've been asked to withhold. I could only describe this great honor to my audience with the words: "I am in shock." I'm blown away by this. It's stunning. I expressed this, and my thanks, to these pilots when we exchanged e-mails. (Text of the e-mails)

My studio transcriber Dawn said of this gesture, "They know who supported the troops." That's true, but this is gratifying and unexpected. I accept this, obviously, with the full intent to share it with all of you, because we're all in this together. I took some pictures of this flag with my digital camera and we've put them up here. They're quite moving.
