Q: Why Does Rush Call Gary Hart "Gary Hartpence?"
A: That's his real name – as exposed in the 1984 campaign.

The former senator, who was forced to drop out of the race for president after being caught with a woman not his wife aboard the good ship "Monkey Business," shortened his name from "Hartpence" to "Hart" in 1961.

Hartpence went on to lose badly to the hapless Walter Mondale in the 1984 Democratic primary race. Hartpence similarly came up short after the 1988 sex scandal. On the eve of the 2002 midterm elections, Hartpence said he was once again considering throwing his pants into the ring.

Gary Hartpence:
"Follow me around, I don't care. I'm serious. If anybody wants to put a tail on me, go ahead. They'd be very bored."

Gary Hartpence:
"Now clearly under present circumstances, this campaign cannot go on. I refuse to submit my family and my friends and innocent people and myself to further rumors and gossip. It's simply an intolerable situation.

"I believe I would have been a successful candidate, and I know I could have been a very good president, particularly for these times. But apparently now, we'll never know."
