So that\u2019s 1968, I was 17 then, you can imagine the modern era of feminism, literally two years later, one, two years later sprung up. And oh, gosh, big changes. I\u2019ll tell you when I knew it. Well, this is too inside baseball esoteric. No, I\u2019ll tell you. On Saturday mornings I had to take our remote turntable and broadcast equipment and go to Sears and do a couple hours of a radio show from Sears. One day the program director got the idea — \u2019cause I was in high school — to bring couple high school girls in and have a discussion about something. I\u2019m still taking orders back in those days. And one of the high school girls that showed up started talking about women\u2019s lib. <\/p>\n I\u2019m 18 and I\u2019m hearing militancy, and she was one of the most popular girls. This was not some angry, you know… One of the big clique. And I wasn\u2019t smart enough to realize, I just thought, “Ah, well.” I didn\u2019t know what I was in the middle of then, but it didn\u2019t take me long to figure it out. I was a junior, senior in high school, and this girl was angry, she was ticked off. I\u2019d never heard anything like this before. So at the time I didn\u2019t know what she\u2019d been reading. Anyway, I can\u2019t find the Syndicate of Sound, Hey, Little Girl, but it\u2019s the male version of what\u2019s expected to go along with Sandy Posey and Dusty Springfield. Dusty Springfield\u2019s real name was Mary O\u2019Brien, and she would have been 73 years old today. <\/p>\n BREAK TRANSCRIPT<\/p>\n RUSH: I\u2019m just sitting here listening to Under My Thumb by the Rolling Stones. That\u2019s from, I think, \u201964-\u201965. I got fired for playing that song. One of my seven or eight times of being fired was for playing that song too often in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, at WIXZ. I really got fired. I got fired for violating the program format by playing that song too often in the rotation. It was an oldies format.
