RUSH: Now, I want to go back to me on this program. See, you people are very lucky. You get to listen to this program. You get to experience one of the greatest things in America, and that is listening to me on the radio. I never get to do that \u2019cause I am me on the radio. I mean sometimes I listen to tapes of myself, but very, very rarely. It\u2019s not the same as listening when you don\u2019t know what\u2019s coming. It\u2019s one of life\u2019s pleasures I don\u2019t get to experience, but you do. So occasionally I will go back and play tapes of me on this program to remind people of what I said. I want to go back to January 6th talking about Mitt Romney and the establishment Republican thoughts, the opinions that they had about Romney as the only electable candidate.<\/p>\n
RUSH: Now, this was one of many times I made this observation. And you\u2019ve heard it, too, that we had to support Romney because he was electable. This is the only guy that could beat Obama. Again, I warn you: I\u2019ve not chosen anybody, and this series of sound bites does not mean that I\u2019m anti-Romney or pro anybody else. That\u2019s not what this means. This stuff is all out there in the public square, so to speak. I do love pointing out when I\u2019ve been right about something, and when I was doubted at the time. So I\u2019m just reminding you. The Republican leadership, establishment, said, “Ah, it\u2019s gotta be Romney \u2019cause Romney\u2019s the only guy that can get elected. He\u2019s the guy that can save the House, maybe help us win the Senate. He\u2019s the only guy that can do that.”<\/p>\n
Yesterday in Birmingham, Alabama, on the radio, Romney was interviewed. Question: “How important is it for you, Governor Romney, to pick up a southern state?”<\/p>\n
ROMNEY: I realize that it\u2019s a bit of an away game, but I also think we\u2019re gonna pick up some — some support in these — in the states that remain this month. We\u2019re gonna get some delegates. That\u2019s, of course, what this… (chuckles) what this is all about.<\/p>\n
RUSH: He was trying to be funny there, saying that campaigning in Alabama is like an “away game” for him. That\u2019s like the Drive-Bys, you know, we joke about them needing a visa to get into Missouri. Okay, so Mitt says: I admit, I admit, getting votes in the South for me; it\u2019s an away game. And he gets pummeled for this. I think he was trying to be funny. I think it\u2019s just his personality. “Yeah, yeah, yeah. I know.” It\u2019s his way of trying to be creative with the way he speaks, but Thursday night in Pascagoula, Mississippi, at a campaign event, former Governor Romney accepted the endorsement of Governor Phil Bryant, and this is what he said.<\/p>\n
ROMNEY: He is now turning me into an — I don\u2019t know, an unofficial southerner and I\u2019m learning to say, “Y\u2019all,” and I like grits, and the things are… Strange things are happening to me.<\/p>\n
RUSH: Now, he\u2019s trying to be funny, but people are beating him up over this. “He is now turning me into an — I don\u2019t know, an unofficial southerner and I\u2019m learning to say, ‘Y\u2019all,\u2019 and I like grits, and” so forth. This is his way of relating to people. He\u2019s not lording it over them, but he\u2019s being pummeled for this. He\u2019s being pummeled today for being out of touch and phony. Let me show you phony. Romney, this is just his way of connecting. He\u2019s just trying to connect to people here. He\u2019s trying to relate, he\u2019s trying to be funny. He\u2019s trying to laugh at himself is what he\u2019s doing here. He\u2019s being a little self-deprecating. But this is phoniness. This next bite, this is a blatant phony, a classic illustration of arrogance on parade. Remember this is John Kerry (who, by the way, served in Vietnam), the haughty John Kerry. In October 2004 in Ohio, he walked into a sporting goods store and said…<\/p>\n
KERRY: Can I get me a huntin\u2019 license here?<\/p>\n
RUSH: John Kerry, the Boston Brahman, Mr. El Perfecto, Turnbull & Asser shirts. You know what distinguishes a Turnbull & Asser shirt? They have three buttons on the cuff. It takes you three times as long to get dressed. They have three buttons on the cuff. I\u2019ve had one Turnbull & Asser shirt. At any rate, “Can I get me a huntin\u2019 license here?” He doesn\u2019t speak that way. He was not trying to be funny. He was actually speaking down to those people. “Can I get me a huntin\u2019 license here?” That\u2019s how he really thinks they speak. In Ohio! Simply because they were hunters at a sporting goods store. “Can I get me a huntin\u2019 license here?” That\u2019s what they think.<\/p>\n

<\/a>RUSH: I\u2019m not gonna play you the sound bites, but Mark Halperin and some others say, “Ah, this Romney. He\u2019s really stepped in it now. It was bad enough when he said he likes to fire people, and it was bad enough when he said his wife drives two Cadillacs, but now he\u2019s really stepped in it,” and so the Republican establishment is really, really nervous now with all this talk about being an away game and he likes grits and learning to say y\u2019all. And I just, again, point out these double standards. They\u2019re doing a celebration today of the Selma March, and when they did this in 2008, four years ago, during the Democrat campaign, both candidates were there. Hillary and Obama.<\/p>\n
