RUSH: Greg in Chatham, New Jersey. Greg, I appreciate your patience in holding on. Welcome to the program.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Yes, hi, Rush. I wanted to comment on the growing outrage over what NBC did in their coverage of the fourth round of the US Open yesterday. They ran a patriotic tribute consisting of words and pictures spliced together with the Pledge of Allegiance, and they left out the words “under God.” The response was immediate, so much so that it was either Nantz or the other announcer towards the end of the show had a non-apology apology where again they didn\u2019t mention that the words that were edited out were those words “under God.” I myself called the USGA headquarters a couple hours ago. They\u2019ve received additional hundreds of calls this morning, and they are scheduled to release a very scathing and critical press release castigizing (sic) NBC for their actions.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Castigizing?<\/p>\n

CALLER: Castigating.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Castigating.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Criticizing!<\/p>\n

RUSH: Uh, yeah. Ripping \u2019em.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Exactly.<\/p>\n

RUSH: You know, Dan Hicks, who was the lead play-by-play anchor said that they just forgot it. It wasn\u2019t intentional. It just happened. Somehow it was omitted. That\u2019s what they\u2019re saying. “Under God” has been in the Pledge of Allegiance for how many years, 50?<\/p>\n

CALLER: At least.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Red Skelton did his deal and we\u2019ve got that Red Skelton tape where he teaches young boys and girls about the Pledge of Allegiance in history. It\u2019s at least 50 years old. It\u2019s been in there. Now, with all that we know about behind the scenes producers and towards at television news networks and the things that they do to manipulate, it\u2019s a little hard to believe that this was an accident. You have to consciously take action and take something out of it that\u2019s all right in it such as “under God.” It\u2019s not like they forgot to add something to it. They actively took something out. That\u2019s hard to square with, “Eh, it\u2019s an accident.” NBC apologized, and apologized to those of you who might have been offended by it. Obviously you didn\u2019t accept the apology?<\/p>\n

CALLER: Absolutely not, Rush. You know, golf is one of the last bastions of honorable sports in America. It does represent everything that\u2019s good about America, and for NBC to try to pull that dirty trick I think is a travesty, and they should be harshly criticized for that.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Well —<\/p>\n

CALLER: I believe it\u2019s intentional.<\/p>\n

RUSH: It will be interesting to see. I think the lesson here for NBC is, if it was an accident, they ought to learn how much this really matters to people. I don\u2019t know if they really know that.<\/p>\n

BREAK TRANSCRIPT<\/p>\n

RUSH: “Under God” was added to the Pledge of Allegiance in 1954. For almost my entire life, the Pledge of Allegiance has contained the words “under God.” So for it not to show up at NBC yesterday, somebody had to take it out — which is an actual physical movement or decision.<\/p>\n
