\"Listen<\/a><\/p>\n

RUSH: I can\u2019t remember if I mentioned this on the program last week or if I was talking to some people over the weekend about this.\u00a0 The Republican convention came up and what it was gonna be, and I told everybody — I think it was on the golf course.\u00a0 I don\u2019t think I\u2019ve mentioned this here yet.\u00a0 If I have, forgive me. It might be somewhat redundant, but not much.<\/p>\n

I was telling these guys, there are still a lot of people I know, I know some moderate Republican guys, I know some Republican guys that, “Get rid of the social issues crowd.”\u00a0 They\u2019re good guys, their wives nag \u2019em about it and stuff.\u00a0 They just as soon not to have deal with it.\u00a0 And they were worried about, “My gosh, what\u2019s this convention –” I said, “You guys haven\u2019t seen anything yet.”\u00a0 The thing that nobody is expecting, Trump is going to put together a show like nobody has ever seen at a Republican convention.\u00a0 Instinctively he\u2019s gonna put together a show.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s gonna take advantage. He knows that because it\u2019s his convention, that the media is gonna be forced to cover it much more than they otherwise would, and it\u2019s gonna be one of the biggest extravaganzas, and it\u2019s gonna present a different picture of what the Republican Party usually presents to people.\u00a0 Usual Republican conventions all take place on the defense.<\/p>\n

A usual Republican convention is designed to show the audience that they are not what the media says about them, that they\u2019re not what Democrats say about them.\u00a0 And Trump doesn\u2019t have an ounce of that in his being.\u00a0 He has no shame about who he is.\u00a0 He doesn\u2019t feel like he\u2019s gotta prove himself to anybody.\u00a0 He doesn\u2019t feel he\u2019s gotta answer critics all day long.\u00a0 It\u2019s gonna be a show.\u00a0 It\u2019s gonna be an extravaganza, total offense, if you want to look at it that way.\u00a0 And it\u2019s gonna blow off the roof.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s gonna be unlike any convention that anybody\u2019s ever seen the Republican Party put on.\u00a0 And the reason I bring this up is because somebody\u2019s done a story about this.\u00a0 Politico:\u00a0 “Donald Trump\u2019s Gold-Plated Convention<\/a> – The celebrity billionaire is revamping everything about the GOP\u2019s dog-and-pony show.” Now, to give you an idea of what I\u2019m talking about, I want you to listen to the way Politico writes about the Republican Party here.<\/p>\n

“Donald Trump has shoved just about every tradition in modern presidential politics out the window, and now he\u2019s preparing to trash one more — the dog and pony show known as the Republican National Convention.”\u00a0 Have you ever heard the Democrat convention referred to by anybody in the media as a dog and pony show?\u00a0 Obviously not.\u00a0 Even by Politico\u2019s standards this is a bizarre open.\u00a0 They are angry that Trump is going to trash the GOP\u2019s usual dog and pony show.\u00a0 Maybe they don\u2019t realize that dog and pony is a contemptuous expression.\u00a0 Of course they do.<\/p>\n

And you compare, what do you think the Democrat convention\u2019s gonna be with Hillary Clinton?\u00a0 They\u2019re gonna have to give Crazy Bernie some space.\u00a0 If they don\u2019t, there\u2019s gonna be a riot.\u00a0 There may be a riot anyway at that convention, which will be its own attraction, by the way, one they don\u2019t want.<\/p>\n

But Politico says: “From speaking slots to prime-time moments reserved for himself, the television celebrity and Manhattan billionaire is dealing directly in the details of his coronation as Republican nominee to maximize the drama and spectacle of the party\u2019s four-night convention.”<\/p>\n

How scandalous.\u00a0 Could you believe this, the nominee is gonna be in charge of his own convention?\u00a0 Why, whoever let that happen?\u00a0 And Trump plans to create news events, too.\u00a0 Really?\u00a0 At a Republican convention?\u00a0 The Politico is angry that Donald Trump is gonna create news events?\u00a0 Listen to this paragraph.<\/p>\n

“Trump plans to create news events too, not just line up speeches by up-and-coming members of the GOP. He\u2019s toying with unveiling a running mate at the convention rather than before. He\u2019s even considering whether to announce his would-be Cabinet. ‘Announcing the vice-presidential nominee before the convention is like announcing the winner of Celebrity Apprentice before the final show is on the air,\u2019 one Trump campaign source said.”<\/p>\n

Do you think one of Trump\u2019s sources actually said that?\u00a0 That could be one of these manufactured things.\u00a0 I doubt that a Trump aide compared announcing his VP to announcing the winner of Celebrity Apprentice.\u00a0 But I guess it is possible.<\/p>\n

“Whereas the vice-presidential nominee traditionally speaks on the third night of the convention and the presidential nominee takes the stage on the fourth and final night, Trump is considering a scenario that puts him on stage, delivering remarks, on all four nights, reaching millions of potential voters and driving ratings, according to one source.”<\/p>\n

And then Politico reluctantly admits the convention will be the ultimate draw for the TV networks.\u00a0 And they hate that.\u00a0 Hillary Clinton all four nights of the Democrat convention would be a snoozer.\u00a0 Hillary Clinton all four nights the Democrat convention would drive audience away.\u00a0 I remember I was in San Francisco for the Democrat Convention in 1984.\u00a0 Oh, what a miserable place.\u00a0 Not San Francisco.\u00a0 The convention.\u00a0 That was where Mario “The Pious” gave his great speech about the poor and the downtrodden.\u00a0 He was contrasting what he thought the real America was compared to Reagan\u2019s shining city on a hill, and he basically described a country that was nothing more than a homeless camp.<\/p>\n

And then the Reverend Jackson also gave a stem-winder, and they were just in tears. It was totally devoted to misery and suffering.\u00a0 And there was Tip O\u2019Neill, you know, the Speaker of the House is traditionally the chairman of the convention of both parties.\u00a0 And so Tip O\u2019Neill was up there in the skybox at the convention, and he had the grand suite at the Fairmont hotel, and then Tip O\u2019Neill goes to the stage and starts talking about the upcoming Republican convention, where they\u2019re gonna be arriving in limousines and mink coats drinking champagne, which is exactly what the Democrats were doing at their convention.<\/p>\n

Well, anyway, on the night that Walter F. Mondale was nominated, they had a camera in the Mondale hotel suite, and the entire Mondale family looked squeezed on a giant sofa in there.\u00a0 And when the convention officially nominated Mondale, he looked at his wife, or one of his daughters, it might have been Eleanor, who, by the way, is a frequent visitor to the Bill Clinton White House, and he said, “Let\u2019s go over there, let\u2019s go over to the hall,” and the family went (sigh). Because it was tough.\u00a0 To go it means traffic nightmares.<\/p>\n

So Mondale broke tradition and went to the convention the night he was nominated.\u00a0 In tradition the nominee doesn\u2019t show up \u2019til the fourth night.\u00a0 That\u2019s always been true.\u00a0 So The Politico writing here that Trump\u2019s gonna be part of this thing every night in prime time.\u00a0 Folks, I\u2019m telling you, you have no idea what this gonna be.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know, either.\u00a0 I\u2019m just telling you, intelligence guided by experience, this is going to be an over-the-top combination of things.\u00a0 It\u2019s gonna have all the elements of a political convention, but it\u2019s gonna have obviously a lot more.<\/p>\n

Trump is gonna try to win every state.\u00a0 Trump is gonna go for a 50 state landslide.\u00a0 He\u2019s not gonna be constrained into thinking you can\u2019t win here, can\u2019t win there because of the electoral map.\u00a0 And he\u2019s gonna use this convention as one of the many elements of his reach out, but it\u2019s gonna be — I don\u2019t know how many celebrities.\u00a0 I\u2019m thinking — (interruption)\u00a0 No.\u00a0 No.\u00a0 No, no.\u00a0 I, no, no, no, no, no, no.\u00a0 Won\u2019t ask me. \u00a0You don\u2019t need media people at these things.\u00a0 But I don\u2019t think he should overload it with celebrity types.\u00a0 Not many of those that are Republican.\u00a0 If he could talk the ones who are into showing up, I mean, the Republican Hollywood celebrity, they\u2019re popular people.<\/p>\n

But I don\u2019t mean it\u2019s gonna be a barn burner in ways people describe these things as big time celebrity, A-list red carpet kind of stuff.\u00a0 I mean it\u2019s going to be entertainment.\u00a0 The content is going to be an entertaining show built around the purpose of nominating Trump.\u00a0 This is a huge deal. Think of it personally for him, what this is in terms of a life achievement.\u00a0 It\u2019s a huge deal.\u00a0 And it\u2019s gonna be all that much huger with him behind it.\u00a0 Nobody has any idea what\u2019s coming.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know a thing.\u00a0 I\u2019m just predicting here.\u00a0 The media know, too, and they\u2019re worried silly about it because they know that there\u2019s nothing on the Democrat side that can compete with it.<\/p>\n

They\u2019d have to bring out Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky and a bed to come close to what the Republican convention is gonna draw.\u00a0 And there\u2019s no way they would do that.\u00a0 Maybe not a bed; maybe just a bathroom with the door closed.\u00a0 You know, recreate it.\u00a0 Of course, it would never happen.\u00a0 What are you laughing at?\u00a0 I\u2019m just trying to give you a point of comparison here of how the Democrats don\u2019t have — and they are considered the party close to all these A-list Hollywood celebrity beboppers and partiers and so forth.<\/p>\n

I mean, how much of Leo DiCaprio preaching about the environment do you want to watch?\u00a0 Even if he does have a bottle of Jack Daniels in his hand?\u00a0 Sorry, that\u2019s snoozerville.\u00a0 Plus, with Hillary Clinton being the final attraction, the big star of the show, night four, Hillary Clinton\u2019s acceptance speech (screeching), “And I don\u2019t –”\u00a0 Please.\u00a0 So it\u2019s gonna be big.<\/p>\n

And here\u2019s a story from a seething CNN: “How Donald Trump Turned the Tables on The New York Times.”\u00a0<\/a> Oh, man, I\u2019m telling you they are seething in the Drive-By Media.<\/p>\n

<\/a>“Donald Trump woke up Monday staring down the barrel of a terrible news week. A scathing New York Times report about his ‘unsettling\u2019 treatment of women was the talk of the morning shows and looked set to dominate the news cycle for days. But by the time the morning shows were over, Trump had muddied the narrative. Now the Times, too, was on the defensive.”<\/p>\n

Now, you notice here, folks, how CNN calls Trump defending himself muddying the narrative.\u00a0 Now, what was this New York Times story?\u00a0 The New York Times story was a bunch of people misquoted and taken out of context, making allegations about Trump as a boor and a braggart and a sex fiend and what have you. When in truth all it was, was a story that attempted to be critical of a guy who likes to hang around pretty women.<\/p>\n

As Dr. Krauthammer said,<\/a> if that\u2019s all they\u2019ve got, you might as well start planning the inauguration right now.\u00a0 If the best they\u2019ve got is to try to destroy Trump by accusing him of liking to hang around pretty women, that\u2019s really controversial stuff, isn\u2019t it?<\/p>\n

“For the umpteenth time this campaign cycle, Trump seemingly succeeded in shifting scrutiny away from himself and back onto the media,” by muddying the narrative.\u00a0 The nerve of the guy, trying to defend himself, muddying the narrative.\u00a0 Nobody\u2019s supposed to have any control over the narrative but the journalists.\u00a0 See, that\u2019s the rules of the game.\u00a0 The journalists get to define the narrative.\u00a0 The journalists get to write it.\u00a0 The journalists get to maintain it.\u00a0 The journalists get to protect it.\u00a0 Trump coming in and muddying it, not fair.<\/p>\n

And CNN is seething when they write: “For the umpteenth time this campaign cycle, Trump seemingly succeeded in shifting scrutiny away from himself and back onto the media.” Why shouldn\u2019t he?\u00a0 Why shouldn\u2019t scrutiny be on the media?\u00a0 See, they think that they are above scrutiny.\u00a0 They\u2019re journalists.\u00a0 You don\u2019t get to investigate them.\u00a0 They do the investigating.\u00a0 As CNN writes here, Trump succeeds in shifting scrutiny away from himself and back onto the media by capitalizing on — listen to this.\u00a0 This is incredible.\u00a0 How does Trump do it?\u00a0 How does he take control the narrative?<\/p>\n

CNN says, quote, “He does so by capitalizing on any uncertainty in the reporting and then aggressively calling attention to it.” \u00a0Well, wait a minute, now.\u00a0 Trump capitalizes on any uncertainty in the reporting.\u00a0 You mean the New York Times reported things that may not have been true?\u00a0 The New York Times reported things that may not have been certain, and Trump had the gall to attack it?\u00a0 You mean the media can be uncertain and inconclusive and even wrong, and we\u2019re just supposed to sit there and eat it.\u00a0 Yeah.\u00a0 That\u2019s the way the average Republican deals with it.\u00a0 Eat the uncertainty, swallow the uncertainty, and deal with it.\u00a0 Trump capitalizes on it.<\/p>\n

And you see, this is what CNN calls capitalizing on any uncertainty in the reporting, by pointing out that the person highlighted in the New York Times refutes everything that they reportedly said.\u00a0 That\u2019s all capitalizing on the uncertainty is.\u00a0 Trump went out and found \u2019em said, “You know what, I didn\u2019t say that. They lied about what I said.”\u00a0 So CNN admits that there\u2019s uncertainty in the reporting, and Trump exploited it and it makes Trump the bad guy.\u00a0 Yeah.\u00a0 Trump was watching.<\/p>\n

I gotta take a break.\u00a0 But how he really did it comes next.\u00a0 And it is a lesson.\u00a0 This is exactly what I hoped people would pick up from Trump\u2019s campaign back in the primaries, \u2019cause this is exactly how you beat these people.<\/p>\n

BREAK TRANSCRIPT<\/p>\n

RUSH:\u00a0 So how did Trump do it?\u00a0 Well, he was watching.\u00a0 “Trump was watching. He went to great lengths to alert others to the interview — even calling CNN\u2019s New Day control room to personally make sure that the producers had seen it. … But for the producers, the call was surreal. Presidential candidates don\u2019t typically call up television control rooms. But Trump is known to act like a TV producer (and his own publicist).”<\/p>\n

So CNN\u2019s reporting on the New York Times story and Trump is watching and they\u2019re getting it all wrong, and he calls them. You think Mitt Romney would do it? Think anybody else would do that?\u00a0 Puts \u2019em on the spot, just challenges them at the moment they\u2019re doing it.\u00a0 He doesn\u2019t have a surrogate doing it.\u00a0 He does it himself.\u00a0 So it\u2019s surreal, CNN says, for a presidential candidate to try to defend himself by calling the media\u2019s attention to statements that are incorrect.<\/p>\n

Some might say it\u2019s about time a Republican stood up to the Drive-By Media.\u00a0 Some might say it\u2019s another reason to get behind this campaign.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
