They made me one of the most beautiful long rifles you\u2019ve ever seen.\u00a0 Somebody custom-made the thing for me.\u00a0 I was speechless and dumbfounded.\u00a0 I was so speechless and dumbfounded, they presented it to me on stage, I was so speechless and dumbfounded, some thought that I didn\u2019t appreciate it.\u00a0 But, yeah, Wayne LaPierre.\u00a0 They were great.<\/p>\n

It was a little confusing.\u00a0 It was very early on in the early days of the EIB Network, and, as I think back, I don\u2019t think it was one of my best, because I was confused as to what was expected.\u00a0 I had an entourage of people traveling with me for this speech that only were with me because this was the NRA. I wasn\u2019t sure what they were expecting, my views on guns or just me to be me, and so I showed up with a view on guns. I actually prepared a speech rather than just wing it, which is what I usually do.\u00a0 And I just wasn\u2019t all that pleased.<\/p>\n

They were great.\u00a0 I\u2019ll give you an example.\u00a0 In the very early days of the program, there were a number of different organizations around the country that would come in with speech requests, and one of them was — what was it called?\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t the Economic Club of Detroit.\u00a0 It might have been the Detroit Advertisers Club or some such thing.\u00a0 Anyway, we had a couple of salespeople at the time — ahem — at the EIB Network who told me this would be an excellent opportunity to do a sales pitch, go out and tell these people to try to overcome some of the obstacles.<\/p>\n

I said, “I don\u2019t think that\u2019s what –”<\/p>\n

“You need to do that. You need to get up there.”<\/p>\n

So I had salespeople trying to tell me what I should talk about. And during the cocktail hour before it started I\u2019ve got one of my salespeople standing next to me that had advised me to do this, and I ask a guy, “What are you expecting in this speech?”<\/p>\n

“We want to hear what your take on the news is. Just do what you do on your radio show.”<\/p>\n

I said, “You\u2019re not expecting me to give you an advertising pitch?”<\/p>\n

“If you do that you\u2019re gonna be booed out of here.”<\/p>\n

So I looked at my sales executive and I said, “Thanks.”<\/p>\n

I was ticked off.\u00a0 I can\u2019t tell you how ticked off I was.\u00a0 I mean, it was a sales guy trying to have me do his job for him in front of a bunch of advertising execs, and had misled me.\u00a0 You gotta be careful out there, folks, you just have to be careful.\u00a0 And when there\u2019s ever any confusion about what you\u2019re to do, be who you are.\u00a0 Always fall back on that.\u00a0 Wendy does it every day.\u00a0 Just be who you are. (laughing) Not even listening.\u00a0 What? I just heard my name.\u00a0 Be who you are.\u00a0 Don\u2019t try to be what somebody else tells you to be or what they tell you others are expecting you to be.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019ve been invited to go somewhere it\u2019s because they already know who you are and they want you to be who you are, so just do it.\u00a0 (interruption) No, no, no, no.\u00a0 I\u2019m not.\u00a0 No.\u00a0 And I\u2019m not gonna get such an invitation anyway.\u00a0 You can stop dreaming of that.\u00a0 Snerdley\u2019s asking me if I get an invitation to speak at the convention, will I do it.\u00a0 I\u2019m not gonna get that invitation.\u00a0 I\u2019m not a political guy.\u00a0 I\u2019m not a party guy out there.\u00a0 When was the last speech you saw me give at a Republican convention?\u00a0 Never, is exactly right.\u00a0 Never.<\/p>\n

Donald Trump\u2019s been at conventions. (interruption) Oh, in charge of… Well, yeah, true, but…\u00a0 No, no, no, no.\u00a0 That isn\u2019t gonna happen.\u00a0 I\u2019d be shocked.\u00a0 And I don\u2019t know if I would do it if asked.\u00a0 I\u2019ve got this no-speech policy right now.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
