RUSH: Here we go again.  So I checked the email during the break.  “Rush, why aren\u2019t you talking about Trump and Susana Martinez?”  Because it\u2019s gonna work out.  It\u2019s gonna work out in the end.  You know, all this up and down roller coaster stuff, you get caught up in that you\u2019re falling for the soap opera script.<\/p>\n

JOHNNY DONOVAN:  And now, from sunny south Florida, it\u2019s Open Line Friday!<\/p>\n

RUSH:  I don\u2019t have time for it.  I tell you, if want talk about something like that, you need to focus on Nikki Haley.  Did you see what she said today?  She said something about Trump that makes it look like it\u2019s impossible she\u2019s ever gonna be with him, something like — oh, his rhetoric — I don\u2019t know.  I don\u2019t want to guess.  I\u2019m gonna have to find it.  I just saw it on a chyron graphic in a news story on TV.  I haven\u2019t seen anything in print on it.  But I don\u2019t want to guess.  But it she compared Trump rhetoric to, you know, like terrorist rhetoric or some such thing.  It was really strange stuff. <\/p>\n

This Susana Martinez stuff, Trump\u2019s walking it back, he says, yeah, yeah, I\u2019d love to have her endorsement now.  He was in New Mexico, he ripped into her for whatever reason, what have you, and people asked why, he\u2019s gonna need her if he wants to unify the party, would why would he rip?  His instincts are his instincts. She\u2019s got her nose out of joint, understandably so, but it\u2019s all gonna work out when it\u2019s all said and done here.  Look, I\u2019m a positive thinker.  I can\u2019t help it.  I hate to get caught up in this roller coaster stuff of, you know, the controversy of the split second that\u2019s gonna have a resolution in a day or two or a month or what have you.  There\u2019s other stuff out there. <\/line><\/p>\n

A story from the Washington Times.  Yale students, Yale University students say — oh, that\u2019s what it was.  Nikki Haley.  Get this.  Nikki Haley compared Trump\u2019s rhetoric to the guy who shot up the Charleston church, Dylann Roof.  That\u2019s right.  The guy who walked in and shot up those eight African-Americans that were in the Bible study group.  He walked in there and started studying the Bible with \u2019em and then opened up, and she compared Trump\u2019s rhetoric to his.  Now, that\u2019s way beyond Susana Martinez territory. <\/p>\n

And then, “How come you\u2019re not talking about Paul Ryan and very tepid endorsement?”  ‘Cause Ryan, folks, it all makes perfect sense at this stage of the game.  Ryan\u2019s got a whole bunch of different people he\u2019s gotta keep happy.  He\u2019s gotta keep the donors happy.  He\u2019s gotta keep Trump supporters happy, happen to be the majority of the party.  He\u2019s got a lot of irons in the fire.  I just think I understand all of this. <\/p>\n

It may well be you\u2019re gonna have a lot of Republicans that are not gonna be fully on board with Trump after the convention, into the election.  That wouldn\u2019t surprise me, either, but it isn\u2019t going to matter.  It\u2019s not gonna affect Trump\u2019s chances.  I hate to say this, and I could be wrong, but I don\u2019t think Trump\u2019s winning the White House depends on an endorsement from Nikki Haley.  “Rush, you know what, he may need South Carolina.”  I just think have to throw all that out. <\/p>\n

Look, one of two things is gonna happen in this campaign, one of two things.  Book it right now, aside from either Trump or Hillary\u2019s gonna win.  One of two things.  This campaign is either going to continue to be outside the standard operating procedure political playbook, or it is going to eventually meld right into it, and it\u2019s gonna end up being as traditional a campaign as any other campaign has been.  It\u2019s either not gonna matter, electoral counts, states and so forth and how Trump\u2019s gonna win because of party affiliation. All that stuff\u2019s either out the window and Trump can rewrite the electoral map and put states in play that normally would not be if it\u2019s a standard Republican nominee, or it is gonna matter.  One of those two things is gonna happen.  And at this point in time I don\u2019t know which it is. <\/line><\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s either gonna maintain this outsider status throughout and is going to continue to benefit from every assault thrown at him, it\u2019s always gonna bounce back and be more damaging to the people launching the attack.  That\u2019s been the story since the campaign began.  But one of those two scenarios is gonna happen.  And that\u2019s why Ryan is keeping his powder dry.  Nobody knows yet how this is all gonna end up.  We have no clue.  That\u2019s one of the reasons there\u2019s a bunch of drama and excitement.  We don\u2019t know what\u2019s gonna happen at these conventions.  We can predict riots.  We can predict a major, major show at the Republican convention unlike the Republicans have ever put on.  And I mean Hollywood type show.  I mean a produced extravaganza. <\/p>\n

And the Democrats, what are they dealing with?  They\u2019re dealing with the biggest dryball to come down the pike.  They\u2019re dealing with somebody they dare not let loose without a teleprompter in Hillary Clinton.  Tensions are gonna be wound tight on both sides.  But I think one of two things is gonna happen, as I say, and we won\u2019t know until things start coming together.  It\u2019s way, way early right now, so I\u2019m sitting back and I\u2019m digesting it all as it transforms before my very eyes and ears.  But have no doubt, when I think it\u2019s important to talk about, I\u2019ll be there leading the pack on it, no doubt.  <\/p>\n

RUSH: This is Rebecca in upstate New York.  I\u2019m glad you waited.  Great to have you on the program.  Hello.<\/p>\n

CALLER:  Good afternoon, Rush.<\/p>\n

RUSH:  Hi.<\/p>\n

CALLER:  Hi.  I\u2019m a Reagan baby and a Rush Baby, and I\u2019m very upset with the Bushes, McCains, and the Romneys.<\/p>\n

RUSH:  Over not supporting Trump, you mean?<\/p>\n

CALLER:  Right.  You know, many of us have supported them, held our noses.  They didn\u2019t fight. George did, but McCain didn\u2019t and Romney did not fight for us.  And even if Trump lost, I would have held my nose and I would have fought right along for the votes of the Republican nominee.<\/p>\n

RUSH:  Right.<\/p>\n

CALLER:  I\u2019m very mad.  And I will tell you this is what\u2019s discussed among family and friends, and that\u2019s why you see people out there in full force.  We\u2019re tired of it.  It\u2019s like they don\u2019t care about us.<\/p>\n

RUSH:  Yeah, it\u2019s that, but I think there\u2019s even more to it.<\/p>\n

CALLER:  Can I say something?<\/p>\n

RUSH:  Yeah.<\/p>\n

CALLER:  I\u2019m sure there is something more to it.  You know, I understand they\u2019re out in the public eye, they\u2019re in the spotlight, they\u2019re on the news, and, you know, they got hit around, punched, name-called.  You know what?  That\u2019s real life.  Okay?  My husband and I, we thought we were living large until Barack Obama became president and told us that we were poor, when he put a dollar amount to what we made every year.  And come to find out we only make $90,000 a year between the two of us and I guess we\u2019re poor.  But it we thought we were rich, we thought we were living the American dream.<\/line><\/p>\n

RUSH:  Wait a minute, how did Obama talk you out of that?<\/p>\n

CALLER:  He put a dollar amount that middle class was $250,000 a year —<\/p>\n

RUSH:  Oh.  Oh, yeah.<\/p>\n

CALLER:  — in money.<\/p>\n

RUSH:  Well, that\u2019s just so they can have a floor for raising taxes on people.<\/p>\n

CALLER:  I understand, have a benchmark.  I get it.<\/p>\n

RUSH:  Yeah.<\/p>\n

CALLER:  But the point is we are the working class people that the Bushes, the McCains, and the Romneys have snubbed.  And not just them, you know, the Bill Kristols of the world, the Krauthammers of the world.  We\u2019re tired of it.<\/p>\n

RUSH:  Krauthammer?  You throw him in there, too?<\/p>\n

CALLER:  Oh, yes.<\/p>\n

RUSH:  Really?<\/p>\n

CALLER:  I do.  I do.  And, you know, you never thumb your nose at us.  That\u2019s why we listen to you.<\/p>\n

RUSH:  I\u2019m too dependent on you.  I am you.  I am all of you.<\/p>\n

CALLER:  We know that.  And, you know what, we love your success.  We love Donald Trump\u2019s success.  We want our country to have success.  We can\u2019t give it all away.  We need —<\/p>\n

RUSH:  See, that, folks, that right there is gold.  That\u2019s exactly the way most people have always looked at — there\u2019s always been resentful and there\u2019s always been people envious. I\u2019ve been aware of that, by the way, since I was a child.  I have always been exposed to people who resented the successful people in town or when I became an adult, the successful people we knew.  Other people appreciate it, but the resentment grew and grew and came to be something that was actually promoted. The Democrat Party started promoting that resentment and jealously and so forth, and then started telling people it wasn\u2019t fair and the successful really weren\u2019t successful. They somehow cheated or stolen from you or what have you.<\/p>\n

CALLER:  Right.<\/p>\n

RUSH:  And that\u2019s a fundamental change.  You\u2019re exactly right.  Most people that are healthy and self-contained look at this kind of thing, like I\u2019ll give you an illustration.  In any town you\u2019re gonna have upscale neighborhoods, middle class neighborhoods, lower neighborhoods.  And the people in the middle and lower class neighborhoods would drive around and visit the upscale neighborhoods and say, “What do these people do? What do I have to do to eventually live here?”<\/p>\n

CALLER:  That\u2019s what we did.<\/p>\n

RUSH:  Instead of driving around wanting to burn it down.<\/p>\n

CALLER:  Right.<\/p>\n

RUSH:  And that doesn\u2019t happen as much anymore.<\/line><\/p>\n

CALLER:  No, because they want a handout.<\/p>\n

RUSH:  Yeah, but there\u2019s more. I think they want punishment to be meted out against the successful as much as they want to be compensated.  It\u2019s one of the reasons why there\u2019s not unity, it\u2019s hard.  It\u2019s one of the reasons why Obama\u2019s had such ease in dividing people. It\u2019s that people now who resent the successful want the successful punished as much as they want to be taken care of.  I know what you\u2019re saying —<\/p>\n

CALLER:  Right.<\/p>\n

RUSH:  — about that.  Part and parcel of what you\u2019re saying, talking about Trump, you believe Trump\u2019s earned his success, nobody handed it to him. That\u2019s why you respect it and why you don\u2019t have any problem with it, he worked hard for it, right?<\/p>\n

CALLER:  Correct.  And everybody makes mistakes, sir, everybody falls, and you lift yourself back up.  And that\u2019s what he has done.  To me, he\u2019s a known entity.<\/p>\n

RUSH:  That\u2019s for sure.<\/p>\n

CALLER:  Yeah.  And he doesn\u2019t pretend.<\/p>\n

RUSH:  There\u2019s nothing they can say about him that people don\u2019t already know.  That\u2019s exactly right.  Hillary can go out — you know, she mentioned his name, in a foreign policy speech, she mentioned Trump\u2019s name 62 times in that speech.  Do you think Trump\u2019s living rent free in her head?<\/p>\n

CALLER:  (laughing).<\/p>\n

RUSH:  Sixty-two times.  You\u2019re exactly right.  There is no oppo research that can come up with anything on Trump that people are either gonna be affected by or don\u2019t already know.<\/p>\n

CALLER:  Correct.  And he\u2019s sticking up for us.  He\u2019s saying what we think.<\/p>\n

RUSH:  See, that\u2019s what they don\u2019t understand, Rebecca, they don\u2019t understand the connection.  I\u2019ve tried to explain it for six months or longer.  They don\u2019t understand the connection Trump\u2019s supporters have with him.  They don\u2019t view Trump as an elitist lording things over them, even when he brags about how rich he is.  They laugh at it, because he\u2019s laughing, too.  He doesn\u2019t come across as braggadocious.  To me it\u2019s simple to understand, but there are people who are still obstinate in choosing not to understand and making no effort to. <\/p>\n<\/section>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
