RUSH: Have sound bite 32 standing by because a woman by the name of Meredith McIver has released a statement through the Trump campaign about the Melania Trump speech.\u00a0 She wrote it, Meredith McIver.\u00a0 She\u2019s released this statement just recently, last 15 or so minutes, and the Drive-Bys are busy dissecting this, trying to analyze this. What does it really mean, because of course it can\u2019t be what it says.\u00a0 There\u2019s gotta be something unstated here.\u00a0 There has to be something going on. Is this woman falling on the sword for the Trump campaign? Did she really not do it, and instead saying she did it to try to take the heat off others.<\/p>\n

Let me read the statement.\u00a0 It\u2019s not very long.<\/a>\u00a0 “To Whom It May Concern.”\u00a0 And, by the way, there\u2019s something very interesting in this statement.\u00a0 You\u2019ll hear it when I read it.\u00a0 “To Whom It May Concern:\u00a0 My name is Meredith McIver and I\u2019m an in-house staff writer at the Trump Organization. I am also a longtime friend and admirer of the Trump family.<\/p>\n

<\/a>“In working with Melania Trump on her recent First Lady speech, we discussed many people who inspired her and messages she wanted to share with the American people. A person she has always liked is Michelle Obama. Over the phone, she read me some passages from Mrs. Obama\u2019s speech as examples. I wrote them down and later included some of the phrasing in the draft that ultimately became the final speech. I did not check Mrs. Obama\u2019s speeches.<\/p>\n

“This was my mistake, and I feel terrible for the chaos I have caused Melania and the Trumps, as well as to Mrs. Obama. No harm was meant. Yesterday, I offered my resignation to Mr. Trump and the Trump family, but they rejected it. Mr. Trump told me that people make innocent mistakes and that we learn and grow from these experiences.<\/p>\n

“I asked to put out this statement because I did not like seeing the way this was distracting from Mr. Trump\u2019s historic campaign for president and Melania\u2019s beautiful message and presentation. I apologize for the confusion and hysteria my mistake has caused. Today, more than ever, I am honored to work for such a great family. I personally admire the way Mr. Trump has handled this situation and I am grateful for his understanding. Sincerely, Meredith McIver.”<\/p>\n

So the Drive-Bys are saying, “Well, now, wait just a second. There\u2019s gotta be more to it than this,” they\u2019re all speculating.\u00a0 “It can\u2019t just be this simple.\u00a0 No, no, no, no, no.” And they immediately began to check something out.\u00a0 I watched a couple these people at the top-of-the-hour break on CNN.\u00a0 This line that Meredith McIver includes in her statement, “A person Melania has always liked is Michelle Obama.”<\/p>\n

So the CNN reporterette said that she got on the phone with the Trump campaign and said, “Did you vet this statement?\u00a0 Did you approve of this statement going out?\u00a0 Do you know what this statement was going to say, and do you have any problem with McIver saying that Melania has always liked Michelle Obama?”\u00a0 And the CNN reporterette said, no, the Trump campaign said they got no problem with it, they vetted the statement, there was no problem in any way with this.<\/p>\n

So that is ostensibly what happened.\u00a0 The bottom line is that Melania Trump said she liked Michelle Obama and read the speechwriter some passages from Obama\u2019s speech, Mrs. Obama\u2019s speech, as examples, and the speechwriter wrote \u2019em down and did not go back and check the actual speeches Michelle Obama had given, thought she was hearing the words of Melania Trump, jotted \u2019em down, included them in the speech, and that was the mistake.\u00a0 So that\u2019s that.<\/p>\n

<\/a>The Drive-Bys are gonna be unhappy if this ends it.\u00a0 Here\u2019s audio sound bite number 32.\u00a0 They don\u2019t believe it yet.\u00a0 They still think that Trump is gonna lose in a landslide.\u00a0 And they\u2019re struggling here with how to view what Trump\u2019s doing on Melania\u2019s speech.\u00a0 This is CNN Inside Politics, John King speaking with Jonathan Martin from the New York Times.<\/p>\n

KING:\u00a0 Donald Trump\u2019s a smart man.\u00a0 He may operate outside of the rules.\u00a0 He happens to be the Republican nominee for president.\u00a0 And go back six months, and, you know, a lot of us were saying, “Come on, there\u2019s no way he can pull this off.”\u00a0 It\u2019s the ideological party.\u00a0 They\u2019re coming out of the Tea Party (unintelligible).\u00a0 He\u2019s a smart man. So he knows if they stir this up today, the third day it\u2019s gonna be dealt by this.\u00a0 And he did it anyway.\u00a0 What if he\u2019s right, somehow?<\/p>\n

MARTIN:\u00a0 Then Democrats are gonna have a very tough four years, and there\u2019s gonna be deep and lasting questions about how politics in America has changed.<\/p>\n

RUSH:\u00a0 Right on.\u00a0 Donald Trump is a smart guy. He may operate outside of the rules, happens to be the nominee. Go back six months, a lot of us were saying, “Come on, no way he can pull this off.”\u00a0 Remember, they were all thinking that he was just one ill-gotten statement away from imploding.\u00a0 They thought it was gonna happen.\u00a0 Everybody thought it was gonna happen.\u00a0 And it didn\u2019t, of course.<\/p>\n

So now you\u2019ve got the controversy over Melania plagiarizing Moochelle Obama, and everybody\u2019s wondering, “Oh, is this it?\u00a0 This has gotta be the end. This is another one of these big faux pas that they can\u2019t possibly survive.”\u00a0 And so they\u2019re thinking maybe Trump\u2019s doing this on purpose. They\u2019re admitting they don\u2019t know how to analyze this.\u00a0 They\u2019re admitting they don\u2019t know how to look at this.<\/p>\n

MELANIA: You work hard for what you want in life, and your word is your bond, and you do what you say and keep your promise.<\/p>\n

RUSH:\u00a0 Michelle Obama in 2008…<\/p>\n

MICHELLE:\u00a0 You work hard for what you want in life, that your word is your bond, that you do what you say you\u2019re gonna do.<\/p>\n

RUSH:\u00a0 And in 1996 in San Diego, Republican convention, Elizabeth Dole…<\/p>\n

ELIZABETH:\u00a0 Because they know he\u2019s honest, trustworthy, a man of his word, his word is his bond, and they know he has exceptional leadership.<\/p>\n

RUSH:\u00a0 Well, not word-for-word, of course, but look how similar the statements are.\u00a0 And, you know, this is what real people understand.\u00a0 This is not… These are commonly expressed bromides. They are philosophy.\u00a0 And there\u2019s only so many ways to express them.\u00a0 And there is no… Michelle Obama didn\u2019t originate these words and therefore the whole notion of plagiarism, I think, ordinary people? No big deal.\u00a0 They don\u2019t see it.\u00a0 They don\u2019t understand what the big deal is.<\/p>\n

CALLER:\u00a0 How are you, Rush?<\/p>\n

RUSH:\u00a0 Good.\u00a0 Good.\u00a0 Appreciate it.<\/p>\n

CALLER:\u00a0 Good, good.\u00a0 Love the show today.\u00a0 Hey, what I wanted to say was going back to the Melania speech the other night. This is a typical example of the left taking really sweet, refreshing lemonade and doing what they always do and trying to turn it back into a lemon.\u00a0 What Melania said is what good parents have been telling their kids, apparently all around the world.\u00a0 Melania\u2019s from Slovenia.\u00a0 It\u2019s nice to know that parents over in Slovenia and probably China and Africa and everywhere else tell their kids, “Hey, do these things. Work hard. Stick to your guns.”\u00a0 You know, “Your word is your bond,” all this Golden Rule stuff. They want us to think that Michelle invented that? And, by the way, in Michelle\u2019s defense, maybe her parents really did tell her that stuff.\u00a0 The point is, this is great to know that there are people around the world teaching their kids to do these really good things.<\/p>\n

RUSH:\u00a0 That\u2019s been my point all along.\u00a0 Some of these things are so universal and time-honored. They are part of the human existence.<\/p>\n

CALLER:\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 That\u2019s the point.\u00a0 But these left-wing wackos — and I know way too many of them, by the way. I\u2019m not gonna name names, but they want to just undo that and turn it negative.<\/p>\n

RUSH:\u00a0 Damn right.\u00a0 They want to tear all that apart, and most of the reasoning for that is psychological.\u00a0 One of the reasons they want to tear that stuff down is because they don\u2019t believe it applies to everybody.\u00a0 Some people just don\u2019t have the proper equipment to work hard. Some don\u2019t have the intelligence. Some don\u2019t have the desire. Some people are facing limitless discrimination. Some people are being treated unfairly.<\/p>\n

“They\u2019re victims, and so it sounds good for you, but…” I\u2019ll tell you where I first really ran into this is back in the mid-eighties in Sacramento, and the homeless craze was just popping up all over everywhere, and I happened to be doing a speech somewhere, and I talked about how maybe the solution to homelessness is work. And crowd started booing and started shouting, “Easy for you to say!”<\/p>\n

CALLER: (chuckling)<\/p>\n

RUSH: And I said, “Wait a minute. If the whole concept of the work and providing for yourself has now become an example of bigotry, then where are we headed?”\u00a0 And it is. It still is that way.\u00a0 And so these time-honored virtues… These are what virtues are.\u00a0 And virtues are part of humanity, no matter what part of the world you happen to be in.\u00a0 And there are aspects of parenting.\u00a0 Every parent, I don\u2019t care where you are, wants a better life for your kids than you had for yourself, right?<\/p>\n

CALLER:\u00a0 That\u2019s right.<\/p>\n

RUSH:\u00a0 I\u2019m sure you\u2019re shouting exceptions to me out there, where the father isn\u2019t home or the mother isn\u2019t home. But on balance, these are part of the human construction.\u00a0 And to try to attach plagiarism to any of this is a losing proposition because<\/p>\n

CALLER: Right.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Michelle Obama\u2019s words, while poignant, were by no means unique.\u00a0 Every parent in the world at one time or another has used them with their own kids.<\/p>\n

<\/a>CALLER:\u00a0 And that\u2019s exactly the point.\u00a0 They\u2019re trying to take of a really great message that we\u2019ve all taught. I\u2019ve taught my kids that.\u00a0 My kids are doing phenomenally well.\u00a0 All my friends teach their kids in so many words, in exactly those words sometimes, and they\u2019re doing well.\u00a0 You know, I wish more kids could hear it, and that\u2019s what the left relies on: The fractured, miserable population. We\u2019ve gotta help somehow. We\u2019ve gotta get it right. But —<\/p>\n

RUSH:\u00a0 Look, there\u2019s another reason why things like this are under assault by people on the left.\u00a0 And you can smirk at this all you want, but Karl Marx — who was a blithering idiot and yet is revered as one of the greatest philosophers and thinkers of all time — was one of the original pollutants.\u00a0 Karl Marx is one of the original agents of corruption of goodness and decency.\u00a0 And Karl Marx believed that the family was the core element of capitalism and virtuous values.\u00a0 And capitalism and virtuous values were the enemy of Marx\u2019s philosophies.<\/p>\n

He believed that the family had to be destroyed as a unit.\u00a0 He believed that the family had to be torn apart.\u00a0 And if you doubt this, ask yourself why are so many leftists so insistent that children be turned over to government-run facilities as early in life as possible for their education, for their molding.\u00a0 What is Hillary Clinton\u2019s It Takes a Village to Raise a Child really all about when you boil all these things down?<\/p>\n

I just checked the mail, and want to explain this. I just did a riff on climate change again, and I pointed out that there is no evidence of climate change other than natural, normal climate change that happens all the time.\u00a0 It\u2019s never static.\u00a0 But there\u2019s no data, except it\u2019s just a bunch of computer models.\u00a0 And somebody sent me an email.\u00a0 “You know, you keep saying the same thing over and over. Maybe should try new tack.”\u00a0 And it\u2019s a good point.<\/p>\n

What is the real problem?\u00a0 Well, I\u2019ll tell you what it is for me.\u00a0 The real problem with people who believe in global warming is not that they believe in global warming.\u00a0 Because people are always gonna be susceptible to the thing, particularly if they absolve them of any blame. And people are always gonna be searching for meaning in their life.\u00a0 So if you tell somebody that they can save the planet by eating organic cow pellets or whatever, they\u2019ll do it.<\/p>\n

\"original\"And if you precede this by telling them that they have participated in the destruction of the planet but that they can now redeem themselves and save the planet, there are a lot of very susceptible, emotionally primed people willing to fall for that.\u00a0 The real problem, the real danger in things like climate change is that people are willing, time and time again, to turn over more and more of their lives to an ever-growing central authority to run everything.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s the thing that troubles me about it.\u00a0 The fact that they believe global warming? Eh! It\u2019s the solution that they all sign up for that scares me.\u00a0 Bigger government.\u00a0 Only government can fix something.\u00a0 Only government has the solution.\u00a0 Only government has the answers.\u00a0 That\u2019s what scares me, because that has a line, and as you follow the line and as government gets bigger, people lose liberty.\u00a0 The bigger the government, the less liberty.\u00a0 And it just keeps going that way.<\/p>\n

And people willingly throw it aside, or are not even aware this is what\u2019s happening.\u00a0 That\u2019s the big thing about this that frightens me. I was telling you that I was back home in Missouri, I ran into a 31-year-old the buy who said the thing that troubles him most about people in his generation is they are running around saying, “The government\u2019s not doing enough! They\u2019re not making enough laws! the government isn\u2019t doing enough to protect the disadvantaged. The government isn\u2019t doing enough to save the planet. The government isn\u2019t doing enough to destroy fossil fuels.”\u00a0 These are 30-year-old people, and their minds have been warped and poisoned with this.<\/p>\n
