RUSH:\u00a0 You\u2019re welcome, sir.<\/p>\n

CALLER:\u00a0 My question — or my statement more or less — is my honest opinion that this current election is a garbage election.\u00a0 I think Hillary Clinton deserves the jail cell, and I think Trump deserves a padded one.<\/p>\n

RUSH:\u00a0 So what do you attribute this to?\u00a0 I mean, how did these two end up being the nominees of their parties?<\/p>\n

CALLER:\u00a0 I think Clinton has the political machine behind her — that fact is in no doubt — and has no problem engaging in controversies when it comes to accepting millions of dollars in campaign donations —<\/p>\n

RUSH:\u00a0 Okay, Trump. How do you explain Trump? How do you explain what many people on the Republican side thought was the best field in 20 years, best field maybe in 50 years, all those 15, not one of them could beat Trump.\u00a0 Why do you think that was?<\/p>\n

CALLER:\u00a0 I think the idea initially was that, yeah, he\u2019s an outsider. He doesn\u2019t have the political clout. But that exactly actually speaks to a point that bothers me on the Republican side, and that is that many of the talking heads opposed Obama (saying?) by being a community organizer, he had no experience for the job. Despite being a senator and having a law degree and teaching law, he was not anything but a community organizer, absent the prerequisite requirements and experience to be president.\u00a0 Now, those exact same requirements are now thrown to the side when Trump goes for office because he doesn\u2019t have political experience. None whatsoever! He has no law degree. Never taught it.<\/p>\n

RUSH:\u00a0 Right.<\/p>\n

CALLER:\u00a0 But somehow the very requirement, the very prerequisites that existed for Obama can now be overlooked.\u00a0 Hypocritically in my opinion.<\/p>\n

RUSH:\u00a0 Yeah, you\u2019re saying something.\u00a0 You\u2019re getting really close, you\u2019re getting warm, but you\u2019re not getting close enough to get hot.\u00a0 And I\u2019m gonna tell you what it is.\u00a0 Celebrity.\u00a0 The guy who wrote on the Huffing and Puffington Post last week that politics has become a reality show. Trump\u2019s a celebrity.\u00a0 Jeb Bush is not a celebrity.\u00a0 Kasich\u2019s not a celebrity.\u00a0 Ted Cruz is not a celebrity.\u00a0 “Yeah, Rush, that\u2019s right. It\u2019s politics! We\u2019re not…” Folks, there\u2019s been a whole lot of cultural evolution going on out there while some people haven\u2019t been paying attention.<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s a celebrity.\u00a0 You think Anthony Weiner\u2019s through?\u00a0 He\u2019s not through.\u00a0 He\u2019s a celebrity.\u00a0 He\u2019ll be back.\u00a0 Mark my words.\u00a0 He\u2019s a celebrity.\u00a0 We are, at this point in time in the evolution of our culture, immersed in a celebrity consciousness. I\u2019m not quite nailing it here \u2019cause it sounds like I\u2019m cheapening things, and maybe it is in a way.\u00a0 But there\u2019s a reason.\u00a0 I played golf with a bunch of different guys over the weekend. That\u2019s what I did, and every one of them — I mean, they all — desperately want Trump to win \u2019cause they just…<\/p>\n

I mean, folks, they are scared to death, and it\u2019s all about Supreme Court.\u00a0 They hate Hillary, they\u2019re afraid of Hillary. The Supreme Court, they… “If Democrats get Supreme Court, we\u2019re done,” in these guys minds, and I\u2019m talking 15 or 20 people here.\u00a0 And they\u2019re saying, “Oh, please tell me he can win, Rush! Please tell me he can win,” and not all of them like him.\u00a0 And some of them start lamenting that it is Trump.<\/p>\n

Even when they want him to win, they can\u2019t believe it. One of them thought Kasich was the down home, total best candidate we had. So why didn\u2019t he win?\u00a0 Why? If this is the best Republican field we\u2019ve ever had or in 20 years or 30 years, why didn\u2019t one of them win? Like Jeb Bush with $115 million, he\u2019s got three delegates to show for it!\u00a0 Why didn\u2019t any of those…? Why weren\u2019t any of those people ever able to make a serious run at Trump?\u00a0 By the way, not one of them blamed me, interestingly.<\/p>\n

BREAK TRANSCRIPT<\/p>\n

RUSH:\u00a0 No, no, no, no.\u00a0 I\u2019m not saying that there isn\u2019t any substance to the support for Trump.\u00a0 In fact, if you want to name the one reason Trump beat all these guys? I\u2019ll give it to you one word: Immigration.\u00a0 Immigration, immigration, immigration.\u00a0 Fifteen people ended up being wrong on it, as far as where Republican voters are concerned.<\/p>\n

BREAK TRANSCRIPT<\/p>\n

RUSH: Now, look, folks, I say things that if I\u2019m not careful, if I don\u2019t go back and put them in context people will think I\u2019m either changing my mind or saying something I\u2019ve never said before.\u00a0 And we had a caller in the last hour who said this election is an embarrassment. Hillary needs to be in jail and Trump needs to in a padded cell.\u00a0 That\u2019s his impression.\u00a0 We\u2019ve got the lowest of the low. We found the absolute two worst candidates we could possibly find. He was wringing his hands, what does it say about our culture, our country, and so forth.<\/p>\n

And I was mentioning to him because the subject came out when I was — (interruption) where did I play?\u00a0 I played Bel Air Country Club.\u00a0 Yeah, I went to California.\u00a0 Some of my best friends in the world are in California, and I went to California.\u00a0 The weather was great, man, 75 for a high.\u00a0 Ho-ho-ho.\u00a0 So played Bel Air couple times, played Sherwood Country Club out in the Thousand Oaks area. Everybody was just fabulous there at both places.\u00a0 Great membership at both places.<\/p>\n

But the subject came up, “Okay, how is it that Trump did this?\u00a0 I mean, there were 15 candidates on the Republican side, and you had any number of conservative commentators –” In fact, when Trump came along and after the first two or three weeks when they started to have to take him seriously, they started wringing their hands, “Oh, my God, this is the best field we\u2019ve ever had. This is the best field of potential presidents, potential nominees that we\u2019ve had and this Trump guy\u2019s coming along and blowing it to smithereens.”<\/p>\n

And let\u2019s go through the names.\u00a0 We had Ted Cruz, we had Marco Rubio, Jeb Bush, we had Kasich, we had Christie, we had Huckabee, we had Carly Fiorina — I don\u2019t want to leave anybody out, but I know I am.\u00a0 But I would ask these people, “Okay, well, then why wasn\u2019t one of them able to beat Trump?” Jeb Bush had $115 million.\u00a0 Rick Santorum.\u00a0 Rick Santorum was one, too.\u00a0 Well, Gilmore.\u00a0 Pataki.\u00a0 Rick Perry.\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 So all these people, why wasn\u2019t one of them able to beat Trump?\u00a0 And I said to them, “Among many other reasons, celebrity.”<\/p>\n

\"original\"If people hear that and are not comfortable, not familiar with other things I\u2019ve said about this, and that\u2019s all they hear, then they\u2019ll get the wrong idea.\u00a0 So I\u2019ve gotta retrace my steps.\u00a0 I don\u2019t doubt, and I don\u2019t mean to take that back, we do live in a celebrity-dominated culture.\u00a0 We live in a culture where everybody wants fame, everybody rewards fame.\u00a0 Kaepernick, I mean, it doesn\u2019t matter what you do.\u00a0 And it seems the more of a reprobate you are the bigger celebrity you are and the more fame you\u2019ll acquire, the more curious people are.\u00a0 There\u2019s no shame anymore.\u00a0 There really isn\u2019t any public ridicule or shame.\u00a0 Not lasting, anyway.<\/p>\n

But I don\u2019t want to disparage what Trump\u2019s done with that.\u00a0 I think celebrity is a factor.\u00a0 But there are clear substantive reasons why Trump beat all these people.\u00a0 And there are two.\u00a0 There are two reasons.\u00a0 And one of them is a topic, one of them is immigration, pure and simple.\u00a0 Republican voters have been lied to or misled by others in the party about immigration for years and then there was the outside versus insider thing, and Trump was, without question in people\u2019s minds, an outsider.<\/p>\n

The fatigue and anger that people have with Washington regulars had boiled over.\u00a0 People just weren\u2019t into it anymore for a host-of-reasons.\u00a0 So call it the perfect storm or what have you.\u00a0 Scott Walker, Bobby Jindal.\u00a0 I mean, all of these names.\u00a0 And then of course all of them were dividing the anti-Trump vote so you have to throw that in as a factor as well.\u00a0 And these postmortems, whatever happens here, whether Trump wins or loses, there are gonna be postmortems, and I guarantee you the people who are most to blame, if you want to talk about blame, are gonna try to point fingers elsewhere for what went wrong.\u00a0 In fact, that\u2019s already begun now.<\/p>\n

But by saying that there is a celebrity factor, I\u2019m not demeaning the substance of the campaign, either, and the substance of the people supporting Trump, because there is.\u00a0 I think it\u2019s another thing that has the Never Trumpers perplexed, confused, or angry because some of them do understand it, that it is substance, that it is not just celebrity. It\u2019s not just things that they can\u2019t achieve themselves or — some of them are not celebrities, are never gonna qualify as being celebrities, so they would love to the chalk it up to that so that their substance can\u2019t be explained as the reason why they lost, but it is, in many ways.<\/p>\n

\"large\"Anyway, there\u2019s a whole bunch of reasons for this.\u00a0 And, you know, assigning each of them a percentage as to how important they are as factors would be a difficult thing to do.\u00a0 Outsiders big, immigration and the position Trump had on it is big.\u00a0 Trade issues, you know, they kind of go with immigration, but there\u2019d be a third leg there of this.\u00a0 Those are the three primary things.\u00a0 And none of the others were genuine outsiders.<\/p>\n

Some of them tried to make themselves out to be, but they weren\u2019t.\u00a0 And some of them had baggage to carry on immigration that they were not able to shed.\u00a0 At any rate, there are still people who think that regardless of the reasons you give them for these two nominees that we nevertheless are scraping the bottom of the barrel, that there has to be somebody better on our side. There has to be somebody better. There have to be more statesman-like people out there, have to be more qualified people out there.\u00a0 There may be.\u00a0 Why aren\u2019t they interested?<\/p>\n

Anyway, we gonna save this for another day when there is more reason to discuss — I don\u2019t want to join the crowd of the blame game now.\u00a0 It\u2019s too early for that.\u00a0 There\u2019s still a task at hand, and I want to keep moving forward here.<\/p>\n

But your comment earlier about the celebrity of Donald Trump.\u00a0 I just wanted to make the point that I actually think it\u2019s the reverse.\u00a0 I think that he has succeeded in spite of his celebrity, not because of it.\u00a0 So I feel like that he really spoke to conservatives for him to be able to overcome just being known as a celebrity and be taken seriously.\u00a0 Because conservatives generally shy away from the celebrity culture.\u00a0 They don\u2019t like celebrity.\u00a0 So he had to prove himself to be taken seriously rather than people be impressed by his celebrity.<\/p>\n

RUSH:\u00a0 Wait a minute.\u00a0 You\u2019ve got a good point.\u00a0 You have a great point there, but I need to ask: What do you mean, conservatives shy away, don\u2019t like celebrity?\u00a0 What do you mean by that?<\/p>\n

CALLER:\u00a0 Like when you see people… You see Hillary Clinton going with Justin Timberlake and Jennifer Aniston, or you hear Hollywood speaking their minds, and people don\u2019t really care to hear it —<\/p>\n

RUSH:\u00a0 Wait.\u00a0 What if Justin Timberlake were out there doing joint appearances with Trump? Do you think they\u2019d like it?<\/p>\n

CALLER:\u00a0 No.\u00a0 I actually think — I actually think that that would probably turn people away.\u00a0 They don\u2019t… I mean, unless he actually, truly believed. I mean, I don\u2019t know.\u00a0 I just —<\/p>\n

RUSH:\u00a0 You know where Bill Clinton was this weekend?<\/p>\n

CALLER: Uhhh.<\/p>\n

RUSH: He was not with Hillary when she was having her coughing spasm.<\/p>\n

CALLER:\u00a0 He was in Detroit marching.<\/p>\n

RUSH:\u00a0 No.\u00a0 Well, he… I don\u2019t know —<\/p>\n

CALLER: (crosstalk)<\/p>\n

RUSH: He was with Beyonce.<\/p>\n

CALLER:\u00a0 Oh, that\u2019s right.\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 I heard that the Beyonce thing. To be quite honest, I think if Justin Timberlake came out, I don\u2019t think that that would look good for Donald Trump.\u00a0 I think that conservatives are not impressed with that.\u00a0 I think he had to work harder —<\/p>\n

RUSH:\u00a0 Well, true, but —<\/p>\n

CALLER:\u00a0 — because of his celebrity.<\/p>\n

RUSH:\u00a0 — remember not everybody supporting Trump\u2019s conservative.<\/p>\n

\"large\"CALLER:\u00a0 Well, I think it\u2019s a false narrative to say that people like Paul Ryan speak for conservatives.\u00a0 People are voting for Trump because he is the one, I think, espousing conservative values.\u00a0 He wouldn\u2019t fund the omnibus bill.\u00a0 He\u2019s strong on immigration.<\/p>\n

CALLER: He wants sovereignty.<\/p>\n

RUSH: No —<\/p>\n

CALLER: While Paul Ryan —<\/p>\n

CALLER:\u00a0 — they\u2019re the ones who gauge who\u2019s a true conservative.<\/p>\n
