RUSH:  So you\u2019ve heard the conventional wisdom about Trump campaign, from the left.  He knows he\u2019s not gonna win.  He knows he\u2019s not gonna win.  What he\u2019s doing now is trying to destroy the Republican Party, maybe because he\u2019s been working with the Clintons all along.  I\u2019m just telling you what some of the conventional wisdom that you\u2019ll find on our side is.  People on our side are saying Trump knows now he\u2019s gonna lose, and so it\u2019s scorched earth. It\u2019s take the Republican Party out and set up his brand maybe for the Trump news network. <\/p>\n

That\u2019s what all of this is, is establishing the Trump party, the Trump segment of the American voting population, which would also make a very large audience if Trump started a news network, it\u2019s to take out and destroy the GOP. And there\u2019s some people on our side who are saying they wouldn\u2019t be surprised if they found out down the road that this was all part of a conspiracy that Trump hatched with the Clintons years ago.  And when I say years, two years, three years, something like that.  That\u2019s one theory that\u2019s being bandied about. <\/p>\n

Another theory has everything in there about the fact that it\u2019s a Clinton-Trump conspiracy.  The most popular conventional wisdom now is that Trump knows it\u2019s over.  He\u2019s not even any pretense that he can win, and he\u2019s not trying to win.  His objectives now are to save the Trump brand, to set himself up for his next media engagement, be it his own show, be it Trump news network, be it whatever it is.  But he knows he can\u2019t win.  He knows he\u2019s gonna lose in a landslide, he knows it.  He also knows he can\u2019t drop out.  If he were to quit now, it would destroy every postelection business idea he has. <\/line><\/p>\n

For example, if he quits now that\u2019s the end of any Trump news network.  There ain\u2019t gonna be loyal people to hang around with him.  If he quits now, he\u2019s destroying every aspect of his potential business future.  I\u2019m just sharing with you things that I hear.  The left has their own theories.  Their popular theory is that Trump knows he\u2019s gonna lose and is so mad that the Republican Party\u2019s throw him overboard that his mission now is not to destroy the Democrats or Hillary, but to destroy the Republican Party. <\/p>\n

Now, I think that theory, that\u2019s what they hope happens.  That\u2019s what the Drive-Bys and the Democrats hope is going on.  But it\u2019s all part of the attitude that they\u2019re running around with that it\u2019s in the bag, that it\u2019s over.  But, you know, folks, the polling data doesn\u2019t say this yet.  Even the polling data they cite, the NBC News\/Wall Street Journal report poll that shows Hillary up 11, it\u2019s an incomplete three-day poll.  It\u2019s two days in a three-day rolling average.  It is it a very small sample compared to other NBC\/Wall Street Journal polls.  The two days it does have are the two intense immediate days following the release of the audio of Trump walking around out there with Billy Bush on the lot at Access Hollywood. <\/p>\n

We find out that this particular poll was also conducted by pollsters with direct ties to the Hillary campaign.  Folks, I can honestly tell you that I have never in the 28, 29 years I\u2019ve been doing this, it has never been this intense from a prep standpoint.  In other words, everything I worked on last night and this morning prepping the show, I haven\u2019t gotten to any of it yet because everything is so fluid and happening while the program is on the air that it is a challenge to keep up with it. <\/p>\n

It\u2019s a challenge, I mean, I\u2019ve got four minutes here, three minutes there, to basically learn what\u2019s going on while I am hosting the program.  And it\u2019s just intense.  Every bit of it is intense.  And it\u2019s changing and flowing at a rapid rate.  Such as this.  This is from the U.K. Daily Mail<\/a>.  This is the first full poll after the debate, shows that Clinton gained nothing, even though voters think she won the debate.  Seventy-five percent of Republicans want to keep Trump on the ticket.  They\u2019re starting to ask this question in polls now, and Republicans don\u2019t want Trump to quit. <\/line><\/p>\n

Now, the Democrats would say that\u2019s a low number, 75%, it ought to be 99%, ought to be 100% don\u2019t want him to quit.  You think you\u2019ve got a good poll there with 75% of Republicans want to keep Trump on the ballot?  Well, they\u2019re not asking that.  Whether or not Trump should cede the slot to somebody else.  They\u2019re not saying the Republicans ought to quit.  Anyway, this is The Politico Morning Consult poll, and it was conducted the day after the debate, published today.  Clinton 42, Trump 37.  It\u2019s five points.  Gary Johnson, Libertarian party, 10%.  Jill Stein of the Green Party gets 3%. <\/p>\n

Gary Johnson, libertarian, 10%?  Come on, folks.  Can we get serious here?  Ten percent for the Libertarian candidate in this, who admits he doesn\u2019t know where anything outside the United States is?  He admits it proudly, happily, \u2019cause it doesn\u2019t matter, we\u2019re Libertarians, we don\u2019t care about Aleppo.  Aleppo Shleppo.  Doesn\u2019t matter to us. <\/p>\n

So, anyway, the point of the polling data is, outside of that NBC\/Wall Street Journal poll, which the Drive-Bys are totally hanging their hats on, there isn\u2019t any polling data that shows that Trump got trounced or that people are abandoning Trump in droves after the debate.  Most of the Trump people watching thought that he won that debate, truth be told.  <\/p>\n

RUSH: Back to the audio sound bites.  This is to illustrate the fact that the Drive-Bys think it\u2019s all over here.  We have a montage here, and this is their NBC poll, NBC\/Wall Street Journal, 11-point lead for Hillary.  As far as they\u2019re concerned, that\u2019s it, it\u2019s over.<\/p>\n

MATTHEW DOWD: Nobody has ever come back from this far down and won the presidential race.<\/line><\/p>\n

JEFF ZELENY: An unprecedented implosion on the Republican side.<\/p>\n

NICOLLE WALLACE: Hillary Clinton is most likely the next president. You know he\u2019s going to lose.<\/p>\n

JOHN HEILEMANN: He\u2019s losing and probably has lost the election already.<\/p>\n

CHARLIE ROSE: This is an unwinnable election by Donald Trump.<\/p>\n

DONNY DEUTSCH: The election ended today.<\/p>\n

JONATHAN KARL: This election\u2019s already lost.<\/p>\n

LESTER HOLT: The civil war in the Republican Party, a flood of GOP lawmakers abandoning their nominee.<\/p>\n

CHUCK TODD: The worst may be yet to come with Trump. They may be staring at a total collapse of the party by election day.<\/p>\n

MICHAEL SMERCONISH: The cumulative effect has finally caught up to him.<\/p>\n

DAN SENOR: Hillary wins and wins big.<\/p>\n

F. Chuck Todd is the guy who said the worst may be yet to come.  They may be staring at a total collapse of the party by Election Day.  And Dan Senor, former PR guy in the Green Zone for Paul Bremer in Iraq after we took over there in the Iraq war. Senor was the PR guy for W, Paul Bremer. He was a Bush appointee, now married to Campbell Brown, formerly of the Today Show, Drive-By Media. <\/p>\n

So the media, three Bushes, Matthew Dowd, Nicolle Wallace, and Dan Senor joining the Drive-Bys. It is over, never before has it been over like this, never before has it been over so soon, never before has it been so humilitingly over, never before have we been this happy, they are saying. <\/p>\n

ABC\u2019s Good Morning America, George Stephanopoulos, Clinton hack speaking with former Bush campaign aide Matthew Dowd, now an ABC News reporter or analyst or what have you, about Trump\u2019s campaign.  Stephanopoulos says to Matthew Dowd, “We heard from Donald Trump on the stump last night that he\u2019s gonna continue with his scorched-earth approach.”  What scorched-earth approach?  Who is scorching the earth?  Seriously.  Who is scorching the earth in this campaign? <\/p>\n

How is Trump scorching the earth?  No, no.  I want somebody to tell me.  How do you arrive at scorched-earth campaign with this?  What is he doing that they think is scorching the earth?  Is it trashing Ryan, trashing the Republicans?  What is it?  All he\u2019s doing is campaigning for president.  He\u2019s running around trashing Hillary!  That\u2019s scorched earth?  What is scorched earth? <\/p>\n

Scorched earth is you destroy everything along the way. You throw napalm out there, you throw a couple of nukes, you just bomb and burn and destroy everything.  Is that what he\u2019s doing?  Anyway, here\u2019s Matthew Dowd reacting to Stephanopoulos\u2019 question about Trump\u2019s scorched-earth.<\/p>\n

DOWD:  I think he\u2019s just adopted what the conservative talk radio is saying the campaign they want to run over the last ten years, he\u2019s running the campaign they want to run.  And what it\u2019s doing as we see from the latest polling is now he has a double-digit deficit that is gonna be very hard for him to come back from.<\/line><\/p>\n

RUSH:  There it is again, that double-digit, 11 points, that blessed Wall Street Journal\/NBC poll.  And now it\u2019s my fault.  Dowd focuses on me.  He and Gerson, I wonder if they\u2019ve got a thing going, \u2019cause he and Michael Gerson doubled team me, they tag-team me.  When Gerson does it, so does this guy. <\/p>\n

And Gerson\u2019s got a piece out, Snerdley found it for me: “What Trump actually did was ensure that hardcore conservatives stay with him until the end of his political journey, when Republicans begin the search for survivors and examine the charred black box. Trump\u2019s performance was perfectly tuned to make a loyal Rush Limbaugh listener burst out in ‘Hell, yeah!\u2019 Put Juanita Broaddrick in the audience? Threaten to jail your opponent? Throw WikiLeaks in her face? Blame her for the death of Capt. Humayun Khan in Iraq? Dismiss all the fuss about sexual predation as locker-room talk?”<\/p>\n

Yeah, the Rush Limbaugh Show.  And here comes Matthew Dowd basically saying the same thing on Stephanopoulos today.  So, see, they want to kill two birds with one stone.  They want Trump to go away, and when that happens, they want you to think Trump lost because I was the campaign manager, which of course I am not. <\/p>\n

Had I been running the Trump campaign, it wouldn\u2019t have been anything like this.  But nobody asked me.  And I don\u2019t call \u2019em, I am not gonna call \u2019em. They got their people chosen. They\u2019ve got people they trust that want to run the campaign.  I wasn\u2019t gonna get within a ten-foot pole of it because I never do. <\/p>\n

But, anyway, I told Snerdley, folks, if they dispatch Trump, the next place they\u2019re coming is here.  The Democrat Party, if they win this, the next four years are going to be about eliminating all opposition, however they have to. If they have to buy it off, if they have to jail it, if they have humiliate it, whatever they have to do, the next — and it\u2019s not gonna take \u2019em four years.  But that\u2019s gonna be their objective, is to eliminate all opposition. That\u2019s where they\u2019re headed.  One of the reasons they\u2019re so happy today is that they think that they\u2019re already well on the way.  <\/p>\n

BREAK TRANSCRIPT<\/p>\n

RUSH: I got an email I checked during the break.  “You said that you would have run a campaign totally different than Trump\u2019s.  What do you mean? What do you mean?”  Well, look, I can\u2019t go into all that, but I\u2019ll give you an example.  Trump got a question at the debate the other night.<\/p>\n

\"original\"Some kid stood up. I mean, I can\u2019t even believe it\u2019s a real question, but it probably was.  A kid stood up and said, “What are you gonna do to make sure the rich start paying their fair share?” Are you kidding me?  For 28, 30, or 50 years we\u2019ve been dealing with this?  “What are you gonna do to make…?” And Trump answered it.  “My tax policies…” That\u2019s not the answer.  The answer is, “Young man, that\u2019s not our problem.  You think the rich aren\u2019t paying their unfair share?<\/line><\/p>\n

“Do you know what the top 1% of taxpayers in America are paying over 50% of all taxes?  Do you know that the top 5% are paying 90%?  So how do…?” I\u2019d argue with the kid.  I would use it as an educational opportunity. Maybe not argue, but I wouldn\u2019t answer it with, “Well, I\u2019m gonna have a policy! I\u2019ll make sure those people start paying their taxes.”  The hell with that!  The middle class are already not paying income taxes. <\/p>\n

The bottom 50%, which incorporates a lot of the middle class, does not pay any income tax.  “What are you gonna do to make sure the rich pay their fair share?”  It\u2019s another teachable moment that was lost, and there have been I don\u2019t know how many of these in this campaign where if somebody just had a basic premise and understanding and ability to explain it… Once again — I don\u2019t know — it\u2019s the whole problem of being inarticulate when it comes to a combination of conservatism and knowledge of present-day circumstances. <\/p>\n

It\u2019s simply not true that the rich aren\u2019t paying their fair share.  But, look, the rich won\u2019t even defend themselves.  The rich will not even say what I just said.  The rich instead will run around and argue that, “Yeah, you know, you\u2019re right, I\u2019m not paying enough taxes.”  You know why they do it?  ‘Cause it keeps people from knocking on their front door with a pitchfork and demanding half of the silverware.  <\/p>\n<\/section>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
