I\u2019m sitting here thinking that USA Today will probably, in a future edition, refer to me as “a hatemongering bigot” for urging John Chaney to keep speaking (laughing) while they are out there trying to get him to shut up because he\u2019s a sports guy; he\u2019s not supposed to talk about politics. Speaking of sports and politics, I have been waiting for this. I knew when the Eagles, the Philadelphia Eagles upon the NFC Championship game in their fourth try, that the media would not be able to help itself and go back to the 2003 season to try to explain some things to people. Now, I\u2019ve been watching and I\u2019ve been reading and I\u2019ve gotten some inquiries. <\/line>The Washington Post called and wanted to talk to me. It was Leonard Shapiro. He was going to be talking to some former NFL black quarterbacks. His premise was: This was a great NFC Championship game. You\u2019ve got two black quarterbacks, which means a black quarterback will be going to the Super Bowl — and I\u2019m thinking, “Look at who\u2019s thinking who\u2019s black. Look at who\u2019s noticing this!” It\u2019s a liberal sportswriter who\u2019s doing a story on, “Isn\u2019t it wonderful that two black quarterbacks are competing and one of them is going to end up going to the Super Bowl.” He\u2019s going to go talk to some black studies professor about this, and he wants to talk to me? I said, “This is a no-win. The story is written. My quote, if I give it to him, is just going to be plugged in someplace.”<\/line> Why can\u2019t they just do a story: “Two great quarterbacks are competing and one of them unfortunately is going to lose and one\u2019s going to win; one is going to go to the Super Bowl”? My whole point all along is, has been, that it is the media that will not let go of race. The media uses race to rally people, to evoke emotion and this kind of thing. In fact it was not really even offered in criticism! It was offered as an explanation for why I thought McNabb, at the time — and let\u2019s go back now. This is the end of September, 1st of October 2001. The Eagles were 1-3, and McNabb had a thumb problem that nobody knew about, and he couldn\u2019t complete a pass longer than 20 yards. He couldn\u2019t complete a 20-yard pass. They were in deep trouble, and the defense of the Eagles was in the previous season — in my opinion, and it\u2019s just football — was what had, you know, helped the team sustain. Well, the firestorm that erupted from this I thought made my point, and I think it all continues to make my point. Now, with that as setup, let\u2019s go to ESPN\u2019s Pardon the Interruption yesterday. <\/line>This is a show that\u2019s on at 5:30, &lt;a target=new href=”http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/sports\/columns\/kornheisertony\/”>Tony Kornheiser&lt;\/a> and &lt;a target=new href=”http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/sports\/columns\/wilbonmichael\/”>Michael Wilbon&lt;\/a>, both columnists for the Washington Post, and Wilbon says, “Donovan McNabb has been so consistently fabulous this season, that even Rush Limbaugh has had to give him some credit. Asked yesterday by a caller to his radio show whether his opinion of McNabb has changed, Limbaugh said, ‘You know it has. There\u2019s been a demonstrable change in McNabb\u2019s performance.\u2019 But the Rush man maintains his stance from early last year that the media overrated McNabb to cozy up to a black quarterback.” That\u2019s not what I said, Michael! I didn\u2019t see you\u2019re “cozying up.” I said you “had a social agenda.” I said you guys can\u2019t let go. By the way, you\u2019re still doing stories on black quarterbacks. We\u2019ve had Doug Williams. We\u2019ve had Steve McNair. Now we\u2019re going to have McNabb. You\u2019re still doing stories on how isn\u2019t it wonderful black quarterbacks are getting in the Super Bowl. I mean, you\u2019re still doing the stories, and there\u2019s no question you feel good about it. So what? That\u2019s fine and dandy. All I\u2019m saying is, that that led you to overlook what I thought were some performance deficiencies in McNabb at that time. Of course he\u2019s better! The statistics indicate that. It doesn\u2019t even need to be substantiated that he\u2019s better. So, anyway, that\u2019s what Wilbon said, getting it wrong again that I was accusing him of cozying up to a black quarterback. That was the least thought in my mind. Anyway, Tony Kornheiser replied.<\/line><\/p>\n

KORNHEISER: In hindsight now, just looking at what Limbaugh says, I think it\u2019s reasonable to believe that some members of the immediate, in wanting black quarterbacks to succeed, like Donovan McNabb personally, thought he was a worthy guy and hoped he would do very well, in the same way that they liked Brett Favre so much<\/emphasize> that they tend to overlook some of the bad things he\u2019s done.<\/line>RUSH: Well, now, here we are, a year and a half later, and one of the guys on Pardon the Interruption is pretty much saying: “You know, just looking at what Limbaugh says…” What else would you have ever looked at? “I think it\u2019s reasonable to believe that some members of the media in wanting black quarterbacks to succeed like Donovan McNabb, a lot thought he was a worthy guy, hoped that he would do very well in the same way that they looked past Brett Favre\u2019s deficiencies that have popped up recently.” I\u2019ll give you another analogy. Have you ever watched a golf tournament where Tiger Woods isn\u2019t doing well? <\/line>This has nothing to do with race, folks. Please, may I say this up front? Tiger Woods will go out and shoot a 78, and the TV people, “Oh, man, he\u2019s setting up the field! He\u2019s doing this on purpose. He knows exactly what he\u2019s doing.” Tiger would be out there fit to be tied, throwing clubs in the lake, and the TV commentator would say, “You\u2019re doing it on purpose. He\u2019s so good he\u2019s losing on purpose to set up the other rounds of the tournament, set up the field.” Watch this thing. Everybody is commenting on this. So there\u2019s no question that there are athletes that deficiencies are overlooked in favor of other things. <\/line>Now (sigh) I don\u2019t know if it just occurred. I don\u2019t know whether this just occurred to him, to Tony Kornheiser, and I got to tell you I like these guys\u2019 show, and I\u2019ve not met Kornheiser but I\u2019ve met Wilbon. I met Wilbon out at Tahoe. We were playing in the NBC celebrity tournament, and I was on the putting green. He was on the putting green, and I spoke to him, and he welcomed me to ESPN and was very nice and I even had a couple of e-mail changes with him, and then the season started and the McNabb incident happened and so… But, anyway, I mean, you hear Kornheiser here essentially in this bite — now, wait for the next one; don\u2019t get your hopes up (laughing). In this bite he pretty much says he can understand it, what I had said. “Just looking at what Limbaugh says, I think it\u2019s reasonable to believe that some members of the media might,” blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. So Wilbon says, “But where\u2019s the social implication there of the media cozying up to Brett Favre? I don\u2019t think he questioned…” I never said “cozying up to” anybody. Anyway, here\u2019s Kornheiser\u2019s response.<\/line>KORNHEISER: What Limbaugh did was race baiting in its purest form. <\/line>VOICE: (Laughing.)<\/line>KORNHEISER: He went out there to be controversial. He knew he could be controversial about race, and he picked on this guy. Now, has he gotten better? Oh, he\u2019s gotten much better, because why? Because people get better as they get older and they get more comfortable and he had Terrell Owens to throw to this year. So instead of having 16 touchdown passes and 12 interceptions he had 31-8 this year. He\u2019s a much better quart(erback). It\u2019s not because of Rush Limbaugh.<\/line>RUSH: (Laughing) Have I ever said McNabb got better because of me? Others <\/emphasize>have said this. I don\u2019t think I have. There were all kinds of things that motivated McNabb, and we\u2019ve been through that. So in one bite Tony Kornheiser says, “Just looking at what Limbaugh says, I think it\u2019s reasonable to believe that some members of the media in wanting black quarterbacks to succeed, a lot thought he was a worthy guy,” and then the next bite, “What Limbaugh did was race baiting in its purest form.” I can\u2019t keep up with these guys anymore. On the first bite, I\u2019m pretty much agreed with; then the next bite, I\u2019m accused of “race baiting in its purest form.” <\/line>He says I “went out there to be controversial.” I knew I “could be controversial about race and I picked on this guy.” How many times…? Let me tell this story one more time. The production meeting for this show takes place at noon or one o\u2019clock on Saturday, and in the Sunday show where all of these fireworks happened, the producers at ESPN had put up two segments on the Eagles. One was McNabb, and what\u2019s wrong, and the other one was, “What\u2019s wrong with the Eagles generally?” So there were two segments, and, of course, my job in here is… I can\u2019t say anything in these meetings, so my job at the time was to throw a flag and disagree with what I had heard.<\/line> So I can\u2019t give away what I\u2019m going to say but I listen to the other guys on the show as they go through the meeting, rehearsing or planning or thinking out loud what they\u2019re going to say, and I\u2019m listening to some things and I\u2019m combining with what I hear these guys saying in the production meeting with what I\u2019ve seen on television with Eagles games and when the show happens, there was no desire to pick. I\u2019m trying to analyze. I don\u2019t understand, and I could be wrong; it\u2019s possible, but I\u2019m thinking, “Why is everybody so surprised that the Eagles are not doing well and that McNabb is not there? I have never thought,” at that point in time, “that McNabb was as good as all the press and the PR, pure and simple.” Nothing to do with race. It had to do with statistics and performance and won-loss, nothing at all to do with that. What I said was, “I think that there is a little social concern in the NFL that black quarterbacks do well.” They\u2019re still relatively new to the position. Everybody wants to prove they\u2019re not just running quarterbacks. They\u2019re smart enough and all this sort of stuff. I didn\u2019t even condemn <\/emphasize>that! I just said that\u2019s what I think was going on, in trying to explain why I didn\u2019t think that there was that much to be surprised about with the Eagles\u2019 performance. <\/line><\/p>\n

Okay, so I might have been wrong, might have been right. Who knows? But the resulting cacophony that focused solely and purely on race, these guys are saying that I purposely sat there and tried to come up with something to get myself noticed and to be controversial and so forth, total lack of understanding of how I do what I do and why I do what I do. I do not say, and never have said things just to be outrageous or just to cause an outrage. I have never, ever done it. Happens anyway when you express an opinion on anything. Look at what happened to John Chaney. He happens to go talk politics in a basketball context, in a basketball circumstance, and the media is upset with him — not nearly as upset as they were with me. But on the one hand, um… Well, I don\u2019t need to go through this again. I mean, it\u2019s just contradictory as it can be, but the discussion continued. Wilbon said, “Well, it\u2019s not because of Rush Limbaugh that McNabb\u2019s doing well. Donovan McNabb is evolving as a quarterback, and he will continue. He\u2019s 27 years old. He\u2019s cut down on his interceptions. He\u2019s much more accurate, 64% now, I think last year something like 57, 58%. That\u2019s a big leap.”<\/line>KORNHEISER: You would agree, would you not, that is… You know, people in the media might root for a certain guy for a variety of reasons, and one might have been it\u2019s nice to see a black quarterback do well. <\/line>WILBON: We. Often. Root. For. Guys. <\/line>KORNHEISER: Yeah.<\/line>WILBON: I know black and white guys root for him. I root for Donovan McNabb and if Rush Limbaugh doesn\u2019t like it I mean that\u2019s tough. I root for him —<\/line>KORNHEISER: Here\u2019s the critical question: Do you think that Donovan McNabb should give his playoff share to Rush Limbaugh for making him essentially the star of the NFL?<\/line>WILBON: I think Donovan McNabb (bell rings) should do what he\u2019s always done, which is ignore Rush Limbaugh.<\/line>RUSH: He\u2019s not ignored me, Michael! He has suggested on your network that he hired me as his marketing agent. He has not ignored me, but I\u2019m not rooting against him! I\u2019m not disappointed when he does well. I\u2019m not happy when he doesn\u2019t! None of this is accurate. It\u2019s all assumptions based on prejudice that you guys on this show have, and many of you also in the sportswriter community have. You have your own prejudices; you have your own biases, and when somebody fits the mold that you\u2019ve created, that it doesn\u2019t exist in reality, you can\u2019t wait to pounce on it. Prestigious, pure and simple is what you guys are exhibiting here. (interruption) I\u2019ve watched the show. (interruption) I did. Yeah, sometimes I like the show. It\u2019s entertaining show. I\u2019m not going to sit here and say otherwise. I don\u2019t have any animus toward anybody, Mr. Snerdley. This is the whole point not these guys. This is football. This is sports. This is escapism. (interruption) Well, they\u2019re not idiots, Mr. Snerdley. They just don\u2019t know how they come off. You know, they don\u2019t see themselves as other people do. Nevertheless they talked to McNabb. We\u2019ve got a couple sound bites. They\u2019re pretty short. Kornheiser, Wilbon, and they\u2019re interviewing McNabb. Wilbon said, “Now, this goes back now about a year and a half. Rush Limbaugh said in his radio show his opinion of you has changed. There\u2019s been a demonstrable improvement in your play and I wonder what your thoughts are of what Rush is saying.” Now, the quality here — we got this from the Internet so the quality here is going to be a little lacking but you\u2019ll still be able to make it out.<\/line>MCNABB: Everyone has their own opinions. We\u2019ve all been playing better but again, you know, I\u2019m not here to impress anyone on the outside. I\u2019m just out here trying to do whatever it takes nor the to help my team win.<\/line>RUSH: Kornheiser says, “But whether or not Rush Limbaugh said it or not, you had a great year.” (Laughing.) You know, my friend Ralph Wiley, who passed away — a great, great writer, Sports Illustrated — his last column or one of his last columns at ESPN\u2019s Page 2, their website last year was lamenting how I hijacked the football season last year, and I laughed about it. But listening to these guys, you would think I hijacked the season. Whatever McNabb did is because or not because of me. So, anyway, Kornheiser said, “Well, whether or not Rush Limbaugh said it or not you had a great year. I mean you\u2019re better now than you ever were. Do you think you weren\u2019t better this year?”<\/line>MCNABB: Well, I feel better. I\u2019ve been eating right and doing some extra running. <\/line>KORNHEISER: (Snickering)<\/line>MCNABB: My clothes feel a little bit better. I\u2019m still the same Donovan. You know, sometimes you have better years than obviously the previous, and, you know, you try to get better each year, and I think getting better and just improving as we speak.<\/line>RUSH: All I ever said was: I agree with that. I guess I should add, “I\u2019m happy about it. I\u2019m looking forward to this game.” I think Eagles-Patriots going to be a great game, but I must say — I must say, ladies and gentlemen — that the quarterback in this league that I think is being overlooked is Tom Brady. If you want to talk stats, if you want to talk championships, if you want to talk a guy that gets it done, has not lost a playoff game. You know, everybody talked about Peyton Manning for a while; they talk about McNabb; they were talking about Roethlisberger. Tom Brady is the guy. <\/line>BREAK TRANSCRIPT<\/line>RUSH: If you guys at Pardon the Interruption are still rolling tape hoping for some more gold sound bites from me for your show tonight, I want to play you a clip. This is from one of the Monday night pre-game shows from last season, two seasons ago, the 2003 season — and it was Stewart Scott who was interviewing McNabb, and I don\u2019t have the transcript of it right here, but Scott asked something about me and McNabb was talking about me, that\u2019s what he said.<\/line> MCNABB: I used that as a little bit motivation going out to obviously show the world pretty much what type of player I was. It was funny the things that happened. I think with everything that went on, I will probably hire Rush Limbaugh as my marketing agent —<\/line>VOICE: (Snickering)<\/line>MCNABB: — because he\u2019s done wonders for me. But I mean it\u2019s been exciting, man, you know everyone is still talking about the Rush Limbaugh comment, but I think, you know, when you continue to look at the end result, the Eagles team is really opening up some eyes.<\/line>RUSH: All right, so for Michael Wilbon, you say McNabb has ignored me.
