RUSH: There\u2019s another (what shall we say?) narrative that has developed in Washington, D.C., and it\u2019s about repealing and replacing Obamacare. Do you know what that narrative is? The narrative is that Donald Trump is being tricked by these rascally Republicans in the House led by Paul Ryan, that Trump doesn\u2019t know what he\u2019s doing, that Trump\u2019s an outsider. “He\u2019s gotten to Washington; he finds himself overwhelmed. He\u2019s got all these aides who\u2019ve never worked in Washington and they\u2019re flying blind and they don\u2019t know how it works.<\/p>\n

“And Paul Ryan is taking him down the sinkhole with this Obamacare legislation, and it\u2019s the Republicans that are outsmarting Trump. It\u2019s the Republicans that are getting everything they want and they\u2019re turning health care into a Waterloo for Trump.” And do you realize how many times we\u2019ve had that narrative since the campaign? How stupid, how uninformed, how inexperienced, how too much of outsider status he has? “Trump really doesn\u2019t understand how these things work, he really doesn\u2019t understand how these things happen.” And now we\u2019re witnessing it again.<\/p>\n

\"\"Despite a painfully (for some people) obvious fact: In practically every one of these instances that you can remember where Trump was just making huge mistakes, he ends up winning everything. Does anybody really believe…? I just need to ask you. And, by the way, as part of this narrative in analyzing Obamacare — the House bill Ryan version 1, Ryan version 2, whether or not we\u2019re gonna go reconciliation, whether we\u2019re gonna try to get 60 votes, how can we ace out the Senate parliamentarian, all of this gobbledygook — have you noticed that, as part of this narrative, the entire Republican effort at repealing and replacing Obamacare fails?<\/p>\n

By that, I mean, every bit of analysis is oriented toward how this isn\u2019t gonna work, how it\u2019s gonna blow up in Trump\u2019s face. And now the meme, the narrative has shifted since everybody, quote\/unquote, “knows” that it\u2019s going to fail, how now can we blame it on the Democrats? And this is so typically Washington. “It can\u2019t work, it won\u2019t work, it\u2019s impossible, it\u2019s too big, it\u2019s too small, it\u2019s too complicated, we don\u2019t have the votes, we don\u2019t have the money,” whatever, “and so now we have to somehow find a way that when it all blows up, the Democrats get the blame.”<\/p>\n

Even my old, former buddy Byron York has a piece today<\/a> about how it looks like… I don\u2019t have the headline in front of me. I\u2019m paraphrasing this from my memory. But it is about how the House Republicans are leading Trump around like he\u2019s on a leash (and he doesn\u2019t know where he\u2019s going) and really, totally running the show and flummoxing Trump and confusing Trump all because they know the deep, dark crannies of the avenues and highways of legislation and Trump doesn\u2019t. He\u2019s just this bull in the china shop. He goes in there, does what he does, and leaves and claims victory, and they say, “That won\u2019t work in Washington.<\/p>\n

“He can\u2019t just claim victory. You\u2019ve gotta actually have victory.” I\u2019m watching this… And there are all kinds of Trump supporters, too, who are writing op-eds warning Trump how the Republicans are tricking him. As though Trump can\u2019t figure it out, as though Bannon can\u2019t figure out what\u2019s happening, as though Kellyanne Conway is… All these people say, “Donald! President Trump! Be careful! They\u2019re tricking you! Ryan\u2019s screwing you! Ryan\u2019s… (stammering) President Trump, wake up,” as though Trump doesn\u2019t know what\u2019s going on.<\/p>\n

I know. I\u2019m amused, entertained, surprised to a certain extent.<\/p>\n

BREAK TRANSCRIPT<\/p>\n

RUSH: Just to restate this, I\u2019m seeing all kinds of media from Trump supporters, by the way. And folks, I don\u2019t want anybody to misunderstand. I\u2019m not being critical. I\u2019m just sharing with you what I observe here, and I\u2019m reacting to it.<\/p>\n

\"\"Trump supporters, both in broadcast and print media, are all of a sudden afraid that Donald Trump\u2019s being tricked. That the Republicans in Congress, led by Paul Ryan, are really snookering Trump every day, and Trump doesn\u2019t know it, and Trump\u2019s gotta wake up and Trump\u2019s gotta realize this is happening. Look, I understand the fear of the guy you supported and the guy you really believed, the one person around today that you really believe can make necessary, significant changes.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s like your team in the Super Bowl losing. Before the game starts you\u2019re scared to death it\u2019s gonna happen, you\u2019re gonna really be disappointed, you\u2019re gonna really be let down and you can\u2019t do anything about it for a full year. And it\u2019s the same thing here with a politician like Trump. “Oh, my God, I hope he doesn\u2019t get tricked!” And to believe that you have to believe that all of a sudden Trump has gone stupid, and yet people are willing to accept that that\u2019s possible.<\/p>\n

But there are all kinds of warnings out there. “President Trump, you\u2019re being tricked. President Trump, you\u2019re being snookered. President Trump, don\u2019t tie yourself to the Republicans. President Trump, they\u2019re taking advantage of the fact that you don\u2019t know how Washington works and they\u2019re trying to tell you that theirs is the only way to get –”<\/p>\n

My only point is my confidence in Trump is not shaken. My view is that Trump is triumphing time after time after time, like last night on this tax return business. How many of you people, let me just ask you, whenever you heard, if you did last night, if you heard about or saw Rachel Maddow\u2019s tweet, “We\u2019ve got Trump\u2019s tax return,” how many of you people had your heart sink?<\/p>\n

How many of you went, “Aw, excrement”? How many of you went “Aw, John F-ing Kerry”? How many of you went immediately fatalistic? It\u2019s the way it happens. It\u2019s perfectly understandable. And yet look at how it ended up. Trump has the trophy again. Trump gets the hardware. These people, it blew up in their face.<\/p>\n

And in the process, many of the allegations that they have been putting out there during the campaign transition up to now, Trump\u2019s lying, he\u2019s not wealthy, he\u2019s a fake millionaire, fake billionaire, Trump\u2019s lying, he\u2019s in bed with the Russians. Everything they said has been disproven. Trump does make a lot of money. He pays more taxes than anybody else does, percentage-wise. It all blew up. And that\u2019s the Trump track record. Not that he\u2019s having rings run around him. So I would just be a little patient and confident.<\/p>\n

BREAK TRANSCRIPT<\/p>\n

RUSH: Mario in Madison, Connecticut. Welcome, sir. Are you snowed in, or did you miss it?<\/p>\n

CALLER: Well, I think we kind of got through it, Rush, and we\u2019re still breathing, thank God. And I want to thank you for your perspective for the last 30 years defending conservatism.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Thank you very much. I appreciate it.<\/p>\n

\"\"CALLER: I\u2019m a little concerned about this health care package that\u2019s going through Congress. You know, I kind of knew that Obamacare was doomed to fail because it was based on socialism and it was gonna take over one-sixth of the economy. But now that I\u2019m looking in on this Ryan plan, I\u2019m thinking also that in some ways, you know, they do call it Obama-lite. And I don\u2019t see how you\u2019re gonna replace socialism with socialism and then expect it to succeed where the other has failed.<\/p>\n

RUSH: You can\u2019t. Well, you can\u2019t replace socialism with socialism and improve it, that\u2019s for sure. Look, just had another defector, Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, the congresswoman from down in south Florida has announced she\u2019s not gonna vote for the affordable — whatever, the Ryan bill here in the House because it leaves — this is part of the pain in the early stage. It leaves too many of her poor and sick constituents out with no coverage and no insurance. She can\u2019t support it. So, in other words, you have a Republican member of Congress saying this bill, that supposedly repeal and replace, is worse than Obamacare as far as my constituents are concerned. Stop and think of that.<\/p>\n

CALLER: I think what they\u2019re doing is they\u2019re framing the parameter of the conversation before it even gets to the president\u2019s desk. I think a far better plan would be to eliminate Obamacare completely and to give employers an extra tax incentive to hire new employees. And this way the new employees will come off the welfare rolls and at the same time, you know, it\u2019ll make employers treat their employees as investments. ‘Cause not only will they produce for the company but they\u2019ll also be able to provide the company with an additional tax incentive to hire new workers and open new factories.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Right. Let me ask you this. Did you vote for Trump?<\/p>\n

CALLER: Did I? Yes.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Okay. Do you think as you read the news, watch the news, listen to the news, do you think Trump doesn\u2019t know what he\u2019s doing here? Do you think Republicans are running rings around him here and because he\u2019s not of Washington, he doesn\u2019t yet see what\u2019s happening, how they\u2019re bamboozling him?<\/p>\n

CALLER: Well, I\u2019m kind of banking on the fact that Donald Trump has signed the front of more checks than anybody that\u2019s been in Congress or in the Senate, and I\u2019m kind of hoping that that discipline is gonna take over and he\u2019s gonna see this from, you know, from the point of view of the engine of the economy, which is business, small business, big business, and not as a, you know, centralized bureaucratic enterprise.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Right. Let me throw a theory out there. And I, as the famous Colonel Klink in Hogan\u2019s Heroes said repeatedly, “I know nuthink, nuthink at all!” I really don\u2019t. Okay, so we can have the strategy here that the way to do this is to make sure it passes the house, but you load it up with so much the Democrats object to it and send it to the Senate where they kill it, and that way the Democrats get blamed for it, not the Republicans.<\/p>\n

\"\"That\u2019s the Krauthammer strategy, and, by the way, if your objective is based on you know it\u2019s gonna fail and you want to find a way to blame the Democrats for it, Krauthammer\u2019s strategy here is good. But what if Trump is way ahead — and I know nothing, and wishful thinking; I don\u2019t know. What if Trump has a long-term plan, and what if it is to let these nimrods in the House and Senate have their turn at it and then announce they can\u2019t do anything and Trump refuses to accept failure and comes in with his own salvation or his own plan, after Congress has thrown up its hands in frustration and defeat and said we can\u2019t do it.<\/p>\n

And Trump says, “Maybe you can\u2019t, but I can, and I\u2019m not gonna let you saddle your defeat around my neck.” Folks, I have no idea. I can\u2019t just that easily accept that Donald Trump, who ran rings around all these people for a year-and-a-half and got elected has all of a sudden becoming the biggest neophyte in town. I\u2019m just having trouble accepting that. Now, they want to believe that\u2019s true, because they want to believe that what they do is so specialized and so unique, you can\u2019t come in and do this if you haven\u2019t ever done it before. Kind of like you can\u2019t be elected president if you haven\u2019t been elected before. And that kind of got nuked, didn\u2019t it?<\/p>\n

So time will tell on all this. But if you trust Trump, if that\u2019s been your state of mind since the campaign, if you trust Trump, then it\u2019s not time to abandon him. He doesn\u2019t deserve being abandoned. He\u2019s still, I think, wise to invest in. He\u2019s going out to address some automobile executives today. He is going to remove Obama\u2019s global warming emission rules for cars in a speech that\u2019s starting in just a few minutes.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Here\u2019s Mike in Canyon Country, California. Mike\u2019s been on hold for quite a while, and I very much appreciate that. How are you doing?<\/p>\n

CALLER: I\u2019m doing good, sir. Good afternoon to you. It\u2019s a great honor to get through and talk to you. Mega, mega dittos. I\u2019ve been listening for 28 years.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Thank you, sir, el mucho.<\/p>\n

CALLER: The point that I just want to get to, let\u2019s not overlook the fact that Donald Trump didn\u2019t get to where he is in life by accident. I\u2019m saying that he\u2019s 20 steps ahead of everybody. And when I watch the news at night I\u2019ll go back from Fox News and I\u2019ll look over at NBC, and it\u2019s quite entertaining, actually. And if you just step back and look at the big picture, I think in due time he will fulfill the promises that he can fulfill. He\u2019s not God, but I think he\u2019s a hell of an individual, and I\u2019m not worried anymore. And thank you very much for keeping me sane through the Clinton and Obama crisis.<\/p>\n

\"\"RUSH: (laughing) Well, I\u2019m glad to know that you were still sane. You know, to me, this is common sense. Now, I know that even if you have common sense it\u2019s a big fight every day to resist what is everywhere in the media. I mean, it doesn\u2019t have to be everywhere for a lot of people to accept it and believe it. And the media is very much aware of this.<\/p>\n

But it\u2019s very interesting how easy it has been to establish a running narrative that\u2019s probably been running for two weeks, and maybe a little longer, but it\u2019s intensified in the last three to four days, that Trump doesn\u2019t know what he\u2019s doing when it comes to the inner workings of Washington and making laws and legislation. He\u2019s being misled by people who do not have his best interests at heart, and he doesn\u2019t know it. And so we need to warn President Trump how the Republicans and others in Congress are out to sabotage him.<\/p>\n

And I think he\u2019s very much aware, \u2019cause I think Trump thinks everybody\u2019s out to sabotage him in one way or another. But even if that\u2019s a bit extreme of a statement, “everybody,” you\u2019re right in the sense that he hasn\u2019t gotten where he is by being tricked and fooled. And I guess those times where he has been, he\u2019s learned from it, it\u2019s never happened again. But where are the stories of “I make Trump look like a rank amateur”? Where are those stories? “I made Trump the look like the fool he is.” Have you seen any of those stories? I haven\u2019t, either.
