The author, Travis Rieder, says having kids is a big contributor to climate change. \u201cHaving a child,\u201d he says, \u201cimposes high emissions on the world, while the parents get the benefit. So like with any high-cost luxury, we should limit our indulgence.\u201d He says it\u2019s only logical for \u201ceveryone on earth\u201d to consider having fewer children, a view that\u2019s spreading in the academic community.<\/p>\n

Rieder isn\u2019t some under-performing salesman at Planned Parenthood. He holds a Ph.D, and is the Director of the Bioethics degree program at Johns Hopkins.<\/p>\n

\"\"Dr. Rieder explains that if having one fewer kid can reduce your contribution to the harm from climate change then you\u2019re making a \u201cmorally relevant\u201d choice. He doesn\u2019t think we should \u201cshame\u201d parents. But since \u201cwe face the very real prospect of catastrophic climate change, difficult even uncomfortable conversations are important.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dr. Rieder. Here\u2019s another difficult conversation. If science supposedly proves kids are bad for the earth by the same token, science must also \u201cprove\u201d that adults, like yourself, are even worse.<\/p>\n
