The headline: “White House Reporters Embarrass Themselves Telling Sarah Huckabee Sanders What They\u2019re Thankful For<\/a> — During today\u2019s White House press briefing, Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters that if they wanted to ask a question, they had to first say something that they were thankful for. And then they all went along with it.”<\/p>\nAnd the people here at Splinter are livid. “Sanders immediately called upon April Ryan, who, as a black woman, has been a continual target of White House press secretaries.” She\u2019s not been a target. Hey, Splinter, April Ryan is not a target. They kiss her butt! Every press secretary since she\u2019s been in the pressroom kisses her rear end. You know, she\u2019s the new Helen Thomas in the White House. Don\u2019t want to make her mad. What do you mean, target?<\/p>\n
“To her credit, Ryan quickly responded with an appropriate level of snark, stating, ‘I\u2019m thankful to be able to talk to you and question you every single day.\u2019 For the rest of the briefing, other reporters then dutifully prefaced their questions with things they were grateful for: their families, the First Amendment, their colleagues, their wives … and even ‘this exercise,'” one reporter said.<\/p>\n
“When AP\u2019s Zeke Miller didn\u2019t give a thanks, Sanders said, ‘you did break the rule of not offering anything that you\u2019re thankful for,\u2019 to laughter from the rest of the press corps. Sanders wrapped up the briefing by saying, ‘thank you for participating in this very fun exercise.'”<\/p>\n
Now, the people at Splinter News say: “This was an intensely embarrassing display. No one should have played along with Sanders\u2019s request. This is not a school, reporters are not children, and they do not have to acquiesce to displays of gratitude just because the White House press secretary asked them to. The knee-jerk obedience was especially humiliating given the way that the press has been treated by the Trump administration.”<\/p>\n
Something as harmless and as innocent as this? The press are not children is news to me too. That\u2019s exactly what they are. You know, you remember our old buddy Tony Snow, Mr. Snerdley? Tony Snow was once a guest host of this program. He was the Bret Baier of Fox News for a while. And then he became White House press secretary for George W. Bush. I\u2019ll never forget one press briefing, they were just all over him about immigration.<\/p>\n
