<\/p>\nRUSH: Would it offend you, ladies and gentlemen, because the president\u2019s first real State of the Union speech is tomorrow night, and I have an idea for what it ought to be. Trump can accomplish everything he wants to accomplish in 15 to 20 seconds and then leave. But would it offend you if I said that what Trump has to do tomorrow night is to show that he doesn\u2019t have horns coming out of his head?<\/p>\n
He has to show and demonstrate that he\u2019s not an ogre. He has to demonstrate he\u2019s not a barbarian. He has to demonstrate that he\u2019s not somebody who disrespects women, that he\u2019s not an idiot and not a moron? Would it offend you if I said that\u2019s what Trump\u2019s primary objective tomorrow night is? (interruption) Only a little bit. It would offend you only a little. Well, somebody did actually say this. A Republican actually said that on TV. I\u2019m paraphrasing it, but a Republican actually said that on TV about 10:30 this morning, like an hour and 45 minutes ago, said it on Fox News.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m watching this and I\u2019m saying, “They\u2019ve learned nothing. The inside-the-Beltway crowd has learned nothing.” They still think they\u2019re on the defense, and they still think they have to prove and demonstrate they\u2019re not what the left accuses them of being. And that Trump\u2019s primary objective has to be to show that he\u2019s not the moron, the idiot, the ogre, and the guy who tweets in bed. Do you realize that\u2019s a major controversy story today?<\/p>\n
Trump admitted he sometimes tweets in bed. Reuters<\/a> can\u2019t believe it and it\u2019s another major controversy. “What, he tweets in bed? For crying out loud.” So what? Are you telling me that none of you leftists tweet in bed? How many of you leftists tweet in the bathroom? Which is worse, tweeting from the bathroom or tweeting in bed?<\/p>\n BREAK TRANSCRIPT<\/p>\n RUSH: And once again from about two hours ago on the Fox News Channel.<\/a>..<\/p>\n SUNUNU: The president and the White House, I think, understand that this is the speech that will have the largest number of folks in the audience that are not part of his base. So it\u2019s a chance for him to show that he doesn\u2019t carry a pitchfork, doesn\u2019t have horns or — or a long red tail.<\/p>\n RUSH: Hasn\u2019t he already done that? What about that 55-minute meeting with the Republican and Democrat Senate leaders on immigration? Can this ever happen? Can someone the left believes is the incarnation of evil convince them that he or she isn\u2019t? I\u2019m here to tell you that I don\u2019t think, marginally, it can be done. You might convince a couple stragglers, but you\u2019re not gonna have a mass shift of opinion on the left. If Trump goes out…<\/p>\n If Trump is the perfect establishment definition of presidential tomorrow night, I guarantee you that over 95% of the American left is still gonna hate him even more! They\u2019re gonna despise him even more. And, my friends, don\u2019t doubt me, because I\u2019ve had almost three decades\u2019 experience with this. I\u2019ve gone through this myself. I\u2019ve had these moments where, “You know what? This a chance to show people that you\u2019re not what the press says!”<\/p>\n People got mad at this guy! He was getting hate mail for making me look human, for making me appear unlike their caricature. The left\u2019s caricature of conservative enemies cannot be changed, and my point is it is a mistake to have that as the objective. Imagine, folks… As a way to illustrate, imagine if every day for the last 25 years on this program my objective every day was to prove to liberal listeners I\u2019m not who they think I am. Can you imagine what this show would be? You wouldn\u2019t still be here, No. 1.<\/p>\n You would have tuned out long ago, and you would have gotten mad at me for being on the defensive and thinking that that was important. And it\u2019s the same trap for Trump. And I have no doubt there are people around him suggesting he do the same thing. “Show them you\u2019re not the ogre that they think they are. Show them that you\u2019re presidential. Show them!” He doesn\u2019t have to show anybody he\u2019s presidential. He is the president.<\/p>\n Let me give you another way of illustrating this. Our old buddies at Campus Reform have gone out there with their cameras and produced something that\u2019s quite illustrative<\/a>. They went out to New York University (NYU) to ask them what they thought of Trump\u2019s State of the Union speech. Now, the speech hasn\u2019t happened. The speech is tomorrow night. These are college students. “Stew-dints,” as some people say. You ever noticed that? Some say “stew-dints.” I say “students.”<\/p>\n Anyway, they went out there and asked these students what they thought of Trump\u2019s State of the Union speech. We have two sound bites. Well, I do that every day for three hours. I do it every day on this program! It doesn\u2019t change what anybody thinks. In fact, there was once a sportswriter for the New York Post who did a story on me that in his own terminology, he said, “You know what? I\u2019m gonna humanize you,” which means the same thing.
