RUSH: Patty in Westchester County, up in New York, nice to have you on the phone. I\u2019m glad you called.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Thank you. Rush, why do you talk about your mistresses the way you do? I\u2019ve heard you do it on several occasions. I don\u2019t know if you\u2019re joking or if you\u2019re serious. I don\u2019t understand it.<\/p>\n

RUSH: (Laughing.) Jeez.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Is it a joke?<\/p>\n

RUSH: Let me ask you a question.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Go ahead.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Do you think that if I actually had mistresses — see, you\u2019ve just — I can\u2019t do anything. You\u2019ve just taken the mystique out of it. Now I have to admit the joke.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Oh, thank God.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Do you think that if I actually had mistresses, I would be advertising it?<\/p>\n

CALLER: Well, I thought it had to be a joke but then you\u2019ve said it on several occasions and it drives me nuts.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Why, do you want to be one?<\/p>\n

CALLER: No. No. No. No. I just, you know, it doesn\u2019t match the image that I have of you. I used to think you were the anti-Christ. Now I\u2019ve grown to like you, and then you come up with things like this. It makes me nuts.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Are you a feminist in any way?<\/p>\n

CALLER: No.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Okay. This explains it.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Why? <\/p>\n

RUSH: This totally explains it. Well, not totally, but I mean partially. Well, put the timeline together. You used to think I was the anti-Christ.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Yes.<\/p>\n

RUSH: I mean, 666 and all that.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Yes.<\/p>\n

RUSH: And so you had to have had some liberal leanings back then, and —<\/p>\n

CALLER: Oh, yes. Yes.<\/p>\n

RUSH: I tend to believe that many women are rooted in feminism, so simple calculation on my part, logic.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Well, I was definitely a child of the seventies and the whole, you know, seventies revolution. But I grew up!<\/p>\n

RUSH: Yeah, I know. I met you people back in the seventies. Some of the most formative experiences in my life with women occurred when I was 21 and 22 in the early seventies, when the new era, modern era, of feminism was being born. You couldn\u2019t compliment a woman on her appearance without her being insulted. ‘What about my brain?\u2019<\/p>\n

CALLER: Right.<\/p>\n

RUSH: They didn\u2019t want the car door opened for them. Reading books by Susan Brownmiller on rape. I remember I had a date once with this woman and that\u2019s all she wanted to talk about was how rape was a violent — I understand that, but this is not — and she made me go out and get the book and read it. So, anyway, you\u2019ve evolved from that.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Yes.<\/p>\n

RUSH: How did that happen?<\/p>\n

CALLER: I matured, and I had a child, and I moved out of California.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Oh, so you moved out of California. Well, but you\u2019re Westchester County.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Yes.<\/p>\n

RUSH: That\u2019s not quite the city, but you\u2019re still challenged, I would assume, by neighboring liberals.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Absolutely, absolutely. Oh, yes. Oh, yes. But I\u2019m learning from you. I\u2019m a quick study.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Obviously so. How long ago was it that you began to question or doubt? Have you noticed, by the way, Patty, how I\u2019ve cleverly turned this conversation away from me back to you?<\/p>\n

CALLER: I see that, but I\u2019m reassured by your saying it was a joke. I\u2019m trusting you on that, Rush. <\/p>\n

RUSH: Of course it is. (Laughing)<\/p>\n

CALLER: But why is that funny? Why is that funny?<\/p>\n

RUSH: Because it worked, it worked. Look at you. You\u2019re calling here asking me about it. ‘I can\u2019t believe he\u2019s saying that.\u2019 You should tell me why isn\u2019t it funny?<\/p>\n

CALLER: Because you\u2019re above that, especially if it\u2019s true, which I\u2019m glad it\u2019s not, but you\u2019re above that. At least I\u2019d like to think you are.<\/p>\n

RUSH: You know — (stuttering)<\/p>\n

CALLER: (Laughing) I listen to the golf. I listen to the football. I listen to, you know, ‘This weekend we had steaks on the barbecue,\u2019 and all that, and that\u2019s fine. But it\u2019s the mistresses that really pushes me over the edge.<\/p>\n

RUSH: (Laughing.) So you have to tolerate the football.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Yes.<\/p>\n

RUSH: And the golf. (Laughing)<\/p>\n

CALLER: And the golf.<\/p>\n

RUSH: And steaks on the barbecue. (Laughing)<\/p>\n

CALLER: Which is nice, I don\u2019t mind hearing about having everybody over at the house and throwing the steaks on and having martinis. That\u2019s in keeping with my image of you: cigars, martinis, drinks, barbecue. Not the mistresses. Even the cat. Even the cat!<\/p>\n

RUSH: What about the cat?<\/p>\n

CALLER: I\u2019ve listened about the cat, you know, Punkin.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Don\u2019t tell me that that bothers you, too?<\/p>\n

CALLER: No, it doesn\u2019t bother me at all. It\u2019s only the mistresses.<\/p>\n

RUSH: By the way, I should tell you —<\/p>\n

CALLER: Yes.<\/p>\n

RUSH: — several of our Founding Fathers had mistresses.<\/p>\n

CALLER: (Laughing.) Okay, so I see the category you\u2019re putting yourself in now. (Laughing.)<\/p>\n

RUSH: (Laughing.) I want to send you away here with no doubts whatsoever, Patty.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Okay.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Because I don\u2019t want you troubled. I don\u2019t want anybody in this audience troubled.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Thank you.<\/p>\n

RUSH: For all good comedy, for all humor that is executed perfectly and well done, there must be a grain of truth.<\/p>\n

CALLER: I know! I know! What is the grain? Is there a friend in North Carolina that e-mailed you, is it an aunt, what is the grain? That\u2019s what we need to know.<\/p>\n

RUSH: (Laughing.)<\/p>\n

CALLER: But you\u2019re not going to tell. I can tell by the way you\u2019re laughing you\u2019re not going to give it up.<\/p>\n

RUSH: There\u2019s nothing! (Laughing.) Ah, you\u2019re cute. Uh, sorry, not supposed to say that.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Oh, no, no, no, I\u2019ve moved beyond feminism. You can tell me that all you want.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Okay.<\/p>\n

CALLER: All right.<\/p>\n

RUSH: See what my normal reaction is? I mean, that\u2019s my instinctive reaction based on the formative training of my early twenties dealing with women.<\/p>\n

CALLER: And that\u2019s a shame.<\/p>\n

RUSH: It is. It\u2019s a terrible shame. That\u2019s why I have mistresses. No commitments necessary. (Laughing.)<\/p>\n

CALLER: Stop it. Stop it. (Laughing.)<\/p>\n

RUSH: Do you really think if I had mistresses I would be admitting it?<\/p>\n

CALLER: You know, I don\u2019t know for sure. <\/p>\n

RUSH: Well, then how can you have this lofty image of me with such a chink in it?<\/p>\n

CALLER: That\u2019s why I\u2019m calling.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Trust your instincts.<\/p>\n

CALLER: All right.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Always trust your instincts. <\/p>\n

CALLER: All right, but I\u2019m going to keep an eye out. I\u2019m listening.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Well, I\u2019m glad to know that you\u2019re out there.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Thank you.<\/p>\n

RUSH: That\u2019s an awful wifey thing to say.<\/p>\n

CALLER: (Laughing.)<\/p>\n
