RUSH: I have a story here from the Anchorage Daily News. ”Talk Radio\u2019s Limbaugh Bashes St. Michael Teen\u2019s Testimony — Radio host criticized for saying Yup\u2019ik youth was exploited.\u2019 Charlee Lockwood has never heard of Rush Limbaugh or listened to his radio program, and perhaps it\u2019s just as well. Monday, the talk radio king told listeners that Democrats were exploiting the 18-year-old Yup\u2019ik Eskimo, and that her emotional testimony earlier in the day in front of a U.S. House committee on global warming made him ‘really want to puke. I just want to throw up.” I did say this. ”It\u2019s the Democrats exploiting a young child, ladies and gentlemen,” they quote me accurately saying, ”for the advancement of a political issue that will grow the size of government and increase their control over everyone.\u2019 Lockwood didn\u2019t let Limbaugh\u2019s comments faze her. Her upbringing in the community of St. Michael included learning ‘about respect and treating people the way you want to be treated,\u2019 Lockwood said, during a brief interview,\u2019 just before she flew home. ”For Rush Limbaugh to make fun of young people coming in and trying to be a part of the political process, it really shows a disdain for political discourse and for the role of young people in that political discourse,\u2019 said Eben Burnham-Snyder, a spokesman for the chairman of the committee, U.S. Rep. Ed Markey, D-Mass.\u2019<\/p>\n

Do you think we could be so fortunate as to get another letter? (laughing) First off, typically, the left-wing blogs are all over it again, ‘Limbaugh making fun of defenseless child.\u2019 ‘Limbaugh mocking child\u2019s crying voice,\u2019 and so forth. Ladies and gentlemen, before we get to some facts here, let me explain something to all of you liberals and all of you Democrats. The days where you get to bring aboard to your committee hearings or in your television commercials so-called innocent little victims — either of diseases, or of age, or of gender — and expect them not to be criticized when they enter the political arena, those days are over, Democrats. I don\u2019t care what you say about me, and I don\u2019t care how you mischaracterize what I do. You people have gotten away with misleading the American people and exploiting sick people, and exploiting children, and exploiting the elderly for way too long. If you\u2019re going to bring average citizens into the political process, which you have just admitted to here, and expect them to be immune from criticism, you\u2019ve got another thing coming, at least on this program. <\/p>\n

I am not going to sit here and stand aside. When I started talking about this yesterday Snerdley was waving at me, ‘Don\u2019t do it! Don\u2019t do it!\u2019 Dawn was echoing the sentiments, ‘Don\u2019t do it.\u2019 I did it, and I am going to keep doing it. I am not going to sit here and let a bunch of liberals mislead and lie to the American people about a hoax issue that they are advancing for political purposes. Now, if you\u2019re just joining us and you didn\u2019t hear yesterday\u2019s program, let\u2019s go back to the audio sound bites. I am serious about this. They can trot out whoever they want. If they\u2019re going to put them in the political process and expect that they are not going to get criticized, that they are immune from criticism, that we\u2019re just going to have to sit back and believe what they say, unh-uh. It\u2019s not happening here, folks. Here is Cheryl ‘Charlee\u2019 Lockwood testifying before Ed Markey\u2019s committee yesterday morning. This is the House Select Committee for Energy Independence and Global Warming hearing.<\/p>\n

LOCKWOOD: (crying) Just in my lifetime I\u2019ve seen so many… changes in our community that it just hurts to (sniffle) not be able to have our… (voice trembling) It\u2019s really scary to lose our tradition, our culture, and we\u2019ve been living here for thousands of years (sob) and it\u2019s not just that we\u2019re losing our food, it\u2019s losing our homes, and — because we are spiritually connected, and emotionally, and (sniffle) physically connected to our homes, and (sob) there are so many — so many — communities that are in trouble.<\/p>\n

RUSH: All right, so I did a little research. That\u2019s the 18-year-old Cheryl ‘Charlee\u2019 Lockwood testifying before Ed Markey\u2019s committee yesterday in the House with all the Democrats expecting she\u2019s going to get a pass and therefore they are going to get a pass. Now, she\u2019s from the West Coast of Alaska. It\u2019s a little town called St. Michael. Before she testified, I wonder if anybody bothered to tell her that it has not warmed up in Alaska in her lifetime. She\u2019s 18. It has warmed in Alaska, but, in fact, it has not warmed in the last 30 years. I have a great chart here from climate.gi.Alaska.edu<\/a>. Let me show this chart on the Dittocam. The blue is cooling. The red is warming. It averages itself out. But there is a reason for when it has warmed in Alaska, why it is warming up, and I\u2019m going to tell you about that. I wonder if anybody told Ms. Lockwood that the warming that has occurred in Alaska is a natural event. It\u2019s called the Pacific Decadal Oscillation. That\u2019s the PDO<\/a>, and it changed phase in the late 1970s, which has caused Alaska and the arctic region to be warm ever since. <\/line><\/a>If you note from the chart on this website, it is also the likely reason why it was so warm in the arctic in the 1930s, which is what Bob from Sedona was calling about yesterday. The chart goes from 1949 through 2005, and what it is is the mean annual temperature departure for Alaska. It has not warmed. Overall, Alaska is not warming up. The mean temperature is pretty much compensating. It goes down, it goes up, it goes down, and the reason for the fluctuation, once again, is called the Pacific Decadal Oscillation. It is a natural event. It\u2019s like a sine curve wave on an oscillation machine. That\u2019s exactly what it is. So to say that what\u2019s happening up there is global warming is simply not true. That\u2019s why I say the 18-year-old little girl is being misled and thus exploited. Look how it\u2019s affecting her. She shows up and starts crying over this. There is nothing we can do about the Pacific Decadal Oscillation, nothing we can do. It changes phases naturally. <\/line><\/p>\n

Now, as I said, I was not ‘making fun of young people coming in and trying to be part of the political process,\u2019 as the spokesman for Ed Markey said. The obvious intent of having Ms. Lockwood testify was not just to have her ‘participate in the political process.\u2019 Instead, it was a blatant exploitation of this girl\u2019s emotions over an issue that Congress can\u2019t do anything about. Nobody in Congress can change the temperature in Alaska. Nobody can make it colder and nobody can make it warmer. They can\u2019t do that anywhere. We\u2019re talking about one degree Celsius in the next 50 years and that\u2019s because of our carbon emissions. So to put the fear of whatever in this little girl and bring her up there and testify like this is pure and simple exploitation. The Pacific Decadal Oscillation is going to do what it\u2019s going to do no matter whether we reduce greenhouse emissions by X percent or not. To brainwash this young girl into believing that we can fix the problem is what is outrageous and grotesque. What is outrageous and grotesque is Congressman Markey and the rest of the Democrats on his committee — and the rest of the Democrats in the Senate who are buying into all this — scaring little kids all over the world with lies and distortions about melting ice caps stranding polar bears. <\/p>\n

The fact of the matter is the polar bear population is expanding in a bunch of parts in the world. ‘Outrageous and grotesque\u2019 is what they called my reaction to this, in this newspaper story, ‘an Anchorage environmentalist\u2019 is her name, about my criticism of Ms. Lockwood\u2019s testimony. See, the game here is: You bring up a little girl. She\u2019s already been filled with a bunch of distortions and lies about what\u2019s happening to her village and her part of Alaska, and she\u2019s emotionally distraught. You can hear this. Here you\u2019ve got the adults responsible for it sitting there using her, and she is simply a pawn in all this to advance their political issue. Their actions are outrageous and grotesque. But I\u2019m not going to sit here and let them get away with this any longer. I don\u2019t care if it\u2019s Michael J. Fox. I don\u2019t care who they trot out to make distorted cases and lies out of various issues for the liberal slant, the Democrat Party\u2019s point of view. When they do that, they\u2019re fair game. The Democrats had better know that from this day forward. We have to stop this, folks. We have to stop the exploitation of sick people and young people and the infirm for the advancement of liberalism on the basis of they can\u2019t be criticized. Not here. We\u2019ll criticize anybody once they enter the political arena. I don\u2019t care what their age. I don\u2019t care whether they\u2019re an animal. They could be Tony the Tiger. If they use a Tony the Tiger cartoon, I\u2019m going to rip Kellogg\u2019s.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Now, not to pile on here, folks, but let\u2019s pile on anyway. Dean up at the website — Koko is out today getting a root canal, so Koko, Jr. is operating things at the website, and he did a little autobiographical research here on Charlee Lockwood. She\u2019s a member of the Alaska Youth for Environmental Action. Now, I just have a short relevant paragraph here of her biography and it clearly shows that she\u2019s been indoctrinated, that she hasn\u2019t seen anything that she\u2019s describing in her testimony. She\u2019s 18. Keep that in mind. <\/p>\n

‘She grew up on the coastal community of St. Michael in northwest Alaska. She attends Mount Edgecumbe School, a statewide boarding school with a student population representing over ninety villages and cities in Alaska. Charlee became involved with AYEA during her sophomore year of high school,\u2019 so that\u2019s two years ago, ‘and at first admitted to not really knowing much about global warming\u2019s impacts on communities. After hearing from her peers about flooding villages, receding glaciers, and altered hunting seasons, however, she decided to take a stand. In 2006 she quickly became a leader on AYEA\u2019s global warming campaign, being personally responsible for the signatures collected from fifty villages.\u2019 <\/p>\n

So she\u2019s not old enough to have seen any of this, and she didn\u2019t notice anything about this until she met members of the group. She didn\u2019t notice anything was wrong until she was told. It is obvious that the young girl has been brainwashed and propagandized, and so it is outrageous and grotesque but very typical for our friends — the Democrats in Congress, and the Ed Markey committee — to sit there and exploit this young girl, who doesn\u2019t know anything. She\u2019s not an expert. She has seen diddly-squat. They don\u2019t know that and they don\u2019t care. It\u2019s the tears; it\u2019s the pain; it\u2019s the suffering that they are content to have her continue to feel. Somebody could grab her by the shoulders and say, ‘Charlee, it ain\u2019t that bad.\u2019 But no! They want her to suffer because they can use her, just like all of their victims: the poor and the miserable and the hungry and the thirsty. Keep them that way so we can point to them and say, ‘See what evil Republicans and capitalism does to them?\u2019 <\/p>\n

They don\u2019t help anybody. They don\u2019t solve anything. <\/p>\n

That town where she\u2019s going to school, I grew up in that town, and they started in on me when I was in high school, too.<\/line> <\/line>RUSH: That\u2019s St. Michael?<\/line> <\/line>CALLER: No, no, no. The boarding school she goes to is in Sitka, Alaska. That was my hometown.<\/line> <\/line>RUSH: Oh, oh, oh, okay. Yeah, it\u2019s just very strange, you know, she — at age 16, when she was a sophomore, she admits to not knowing a thing about it, then she meets up with these peers and then becomes an ‘expert.\u2019 <\/line> <\/line>CALLER: Oh, yeah.<\/line> <\/line>RUSH: She never saw one instance or example of the so-called destruction of communities and animals and so forth. She hasn\u2019t lived long enough to see that. So she\u2019s just believing the propaganda that she\u2019s been told. She\u2019s been brainwashed.<\/line> <\/line>CALLER: Well, as far as losing their way of life, they have grocery stores like any other small town. If they were losing their way of life, that would probably mean the liquor store was closing.<\/line> <\/line>RUSH: (laughter) You must have had a very pleasant experience up there.<\/line> <\/line>CALLER: Let\u2019s just say I am a Texan by choice now.<\/line> <\/line>RUSH: But you\u2019re a native Alaskan?<\/line><\/p>\n

CALLER: Yes.<\/line> <\/line>RUSH: Okay. Given the new rules of public discourse, you know, like one group cannot criticize another group, or a member of a group can\u2019t — like I can\u2019t criticize women because I\u2019m not a woman, but another woman can rip. I can\u2019t criticize your family, Snerdley, even after listening to you rip \u2019em to shreds, but if I do it, I\u2019m over. She\u2019s an Alaskan, so she knows. She can say that stuff.<\/line> <\/line>CALLER: Yeah. To be perfectly honest, most of those small villages, a lot of people just live off the government and they drink and have babies at 15. That is what they do.<\/line> <\/line>RUSH: Live off the government?<\/line> <\/line>CALLER: Yeah.<\/line> <\/line>RUSH: Liberalism has created a lot of that in the country, not just Alaska. Let\u2019s not let\u2019s not pile on here unnecessarily. There\u2019s a lot of that going on at all kinds of places in the country.<\/line> <\/line>CALLER: I was considered weird because I wanted to go to college at 18.<\/line> <\/line>RUSH: Really? Well, what finally motivated you to escape the liquor stores of Alaska?<\/line> <\/line>CALLER: I hate the cold.<\/line> <\/line>RUSH: That would be a good reason. Wait a minute! It\u2019s warming up, up there.<\/line> <\/line>CALLER: Not warming enough for me. It gets to be close to 100 degrees in Texas.<\/line> <\/line>RUSH: (laughter) All right. Look, Shannon, thanks for the call. I appreciate it. Can I give you another fallacy, though, of Charlee Lockwood and the people like her? You\u2019ve heard me say on countless occasions, ladies and gentlemen — so eloquently, so brilliantly, so uniquely — that all living species (and we are ‘at the top of that totem pole,\u2019 a little Indian lingo there) must adapt the environment or to it in order to thrive. We have to try to put out forest files, for example, if we\u2019re going to live near forests. We have to do what we can do to protect our homes if we live in a floodplain. We cannot avoid natural disasters. They occur everywhere. A blizzard, snowstorm, windstorm, tornadoes, whatever. We have to adapt in order to thrive as a species, and so do animals. So every living organism has to thrive, otherwise the environment could kill us all. Now, if indeed a particular place becomes uninhabitable, and you are a human being, and you have a family, what do you do? Do you keep your family in the uninhabitable place and just perish, and cry, and moan about the loss of tribal this or traditional that, or do you move? Do you try to escape whatever — and I\u2019m not suggesting, by the way, that what\u2019s happening to Alaska is making it uninhabitable. I\u2019m using that as an extreme example. Why just sit there and put up with it if it\u2019s that bad, when there\u2019s nothing Congress can do to change it? If it\u2019s related to temperature — I am sorry, I hate to break it to you, but — there\u2019s nothing a single human being can do to make it cooler in the summer or warmer in the winter, other than look at the forecast and hope they\u2019re right, or wrong, depending on what they\u2019re saying. There\u2019s not a thing we can do about it. So if you\u2019re going to go before Ed Markey\u2019s committee and you are going to spout this stuff that you\u2019ve been brainwashed with and demand that Congress do something, about all they can do (besides nothing) is raise people\u2019s taxes and make it look like they\u2019re doing something. It\u2019s just a charade from the get-go. <\/line><\/p>\n

CALLER: I want to go back to that Alaskan girl that they put up to talk with the stuff, and I was wondering exactly what thousand-year-old traditions that they were referring to and if it included things like snowmobiles, electricity, telephones, bush pilots, and igloos. I mean, what is it that they\u2019re trying to preserve with the way that they\u2019re living now today?<\/p>\n

RUSH: Well, let\u2019s go back and listen to the bite. Let\u2019s listen to the sound bite again. I love listening to the sound bite. I love listening to Democrats make little girls cry. I love making liberals instill them with propaganda, scares them to death and makes them cry. So here is Charlee Lockwood — who, by the way, is 18. She admits that she knew nothing about ‘global warming\u2019 when she was 16. She hasn\u2019t seen any of the destruction of these great traditions. She\u2019s been told about it, which makes it clear that she\u2019s been propagandized and brainwashed. But here\u2019s what she said. Let\u2019s listen. <\/p>\n

CALLER: Well, at the beginning, she actually claims that she has seen some of this, so I\u2019m not sure how that can be possible. So I would actually coin a phrase here, call it ‘phony traditionalists\u2019 and maybe that will spur another letter by Mr. Reid, I don\u2019t know, but it just seems silly to me that they tried to go on this traditionalist background, and everything is changing — when it has already changed for the good, I might add, based upon technology that they use.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Exactly right.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Do they really want to go back to the way they used to live 200 years ago?<\/p>\n

RUSH: A thousand years ago.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Oh, let\u2019s not limit ourselves.<\/p>\n

RUSH: That\u2019s not what this is about, and your questions are very thorough and illustrative in making that point. Of course nobody wants to go back to the way it was 200 years ago. If we did that, we\u2019d be dealing with horse manure in the streets; we wouldn\u2019t have air-conditioning; we would not have indoor plumbing. Nobody wants to go back to that. Those are not grand and great traditions from the past that will unite us spiritually as members of a community. It\u2019s all bogus. This is just emotional heartstring-tugging. It\u2019s all it is. In fact, I\u2019ll tell you what, folks. I\u2019m going to go out on a limb here — something I\u2019m familiar with doing and I do regularly on this program. I think that it is sexist. I think that it is profoundly sexist of Congressman Markey and the rest of the members of that committee to bring up a poor girl, a young girl who\u2019s been obviously propagandized, and she\u2019s crying her heart out. Would they ever bring a man up there to do that? Would they ever bring a boy up there to start crying? No, but, ‘Let\u2019s go get the girl! We can count on her to start bawling.\u2019<\/p>\n

Well, you keep calling her a ‘girl,\u2019 but she\u2019s 18 years old, and in all 50 states she\u2019s old enough to get married without a parent\u2019s permission. She\u2019s old enough to join the Army and in most states she can dance in a strip club. Why are we calling her a girl? She\u2019s not a kid anymore.<\/p>\n

RUSH: We\u2019re splitting hairs here. But if you want —<\/p>\n

RUSH: If you want to put this poor, innocent young Eskimo, who has been brainwashed and propagandized to the point of tears in a strip club —<\/p>\n

RUSH: An 18-year-old woman brought up to Congress to cry on cue —<\/p>\n

RUSH: — about vanishing thousand-year-old traditions of obtaining food and shelter.<\/p>\n

CALLER: She may have won a crying contest somewhere and they said, ‘We gotta have her.\u2019<\/p>\n

RUSH: Well, maybe. The Democrats research this stuff, and it\u2019s all done for the photogenic aspect and the ability of the interviewee to reach out emotionally beyond the TV screen into the hearts and minds of viewers. But here we have an 18-year-old woman who\u2019s brought up to Congress to cry, and when you were 18, they gave you no choice and sent you to Vietnam —<\/p>\n

RUSH: — and you didn\u2019t have time to cry.<\/p>\n

CALLER: No, and we had too much fun to cry over there. But I\u2019m glad we can all see through the Democrats and people like her. <\/p>\n
