RUSH: Now, this is just too good, folks. This is too good to pass up. Jonathan Alter is sitting there at Newsweek minding his own business, plotting how to advance more and more liberalism into the Drive-By Media agenda. The phone rings, and on the other end is the ‘hand grenade with a bad haircut,\u2019 and that would be H. Ross Perot. Here\u2019s how Alter writes about this: <\/p>\n

‘The phone rang and it was Ross Perot, who hasn\u2019t given an interview in years. Perot, who won 19 percent of the vote in the 1992 presidential election, making him one of the strongest third-party candidates in American history, got straight to the point. ‘Remember what you wrote about John McCain in the March 13, 2000, Newsweek?\u2019 ‘Sure,\u2019 I lied. ‘When McCain called Perot ‘nuttier than a fruitcake\u2019?” Perot never forgets. McCain called Perot ‘nuttier than a fruitcake.\u2019 ‘The Texas billionaire, now 77, still has some scores to settle from the Vietnam era, and his timing is exquisite. Just days before the South Carolina GOP primary, he wants [Alter] to know that McCain ‘is the classic opportunist — he\u2019s always reaching for attention and glory. Other POWs won\u2019t even sit at the same table with him,” quote, unquote: Perot. ‘Mark Salter, McCain\u2019s longtime top aide, says the Arizona senator has plenty of veteran support and many close friendships among other former POWs. The Perot-McCain relationship goes back to McCain\u2019s five and a half years of captivity in Hanoi. <\/p>\n

‘When McCain\u2019s then-wife Carol was in a serious car accident, McCain\u2019s mother,\u2019 of all people, ‘called Perot for help. ‘She asked me to send my people to Philadelphia to take care of the family,\u2019 Perot says,\u2019 and Perot did it. ‘Afterwards, McCain was grateful. ‘We loved him [Perot] for it,\u2019 McCain told [Alter] in 2000. Perot doesn\u2019t remember it that way.\u2019 Perot said, ”After he came home, he walked with a limp, she (Carol McCain) walked with a limp. So he threw her over for a poster girl with big money from Arizona (Cindy McCain, his current wife) and the rest is history.” This is what Perot said to Alter on the phone yesterday. He threw his wife overboard for a poster girl with big money. ‘Perot\u2019s real problem with McCain is that he believes the senator hushed up evidence that live POWs were left behind in Vietnam and even transferred to the Soviet Union for human experimentation…\u2019 This is what I was alluding to earlier in the program. You know, if you go to the right websites, anything you want is on the Web, but there is some real vitriol out there about this from former veterans who really believe that after McCain got back and elected to the Senate. There were hearings on this. Some people got the Congress interested in this and the Senate interested in this, and these people are convinced.<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t know what the truth is. Do not associate an opinion here. I am just telling you what I know from what I\u2019ve read. There are some people who think McCain purposely, in order to further good relations with the new government of Vietnam, didn\u2019t want to push the issue and tried to sweep it under the rug during the hearings. McCain says he didn\u2019t do that. McCain says these guys are making it up, and there was nobody that was knowingly left behind or any of that. ‘Perot says he intends to vote for Mitt Romney in the Texas Republican primary on March 4, citing Romney\u2019s experience in business and his family values. ‘When I went to the Naval Academy and met my first Mormons I asked why so many were excellent officers,\u2019 Perot recalls. ‘I learned it was because of their strong family unit.” (interruption) There\u2019s no time? Well, that\u2019s a bite. We have an audio sound bite. We have audio of Perot who has gone… (interruption) We can\u2019t squeeze this? How long is the bite? (interruption) It\u2019s a minute? I read the transcript of this thing; it didn\u2019t look like it was a minute. All right, well, we\u2019ll have that coming out. Also, the Annenberg outfit, I think that\u2019s where Kathleen Hall Jamison works, the FactCheck.org. Yeah, they\u2019re out there looking into McCain. McCain\u2019s got a mailer that he\u2019s sending out about Romney, and they fact checked it and found that it\u2019s misleading. Well, really? It\u2019s politics. It\u2019s a campaign.
