There\u2019s a story in the New Republic by Michael Crowley. ‘[S]ome Washington foreign policy mandarins insist this isn\u2019t possible — that a total US withdrawal isn\u2019t achievable and Obama knows it. That Obama, like Nixon, in fact has a secret plan not to end the war. ‘The classic storyline is that everyone wants to get out, but we\u2019re not going to get out, and everyone\u2019s going to be disappointed,\u2019 says Derek Chollet, a former foreign policy adviser to John Edwards. Or, at least, that Obama\u2019s speeches overstate the feasibility of a near-term Iraq exit. ‘Close to a pipe dream,\u2019 says the Council on Foreign Relations\u2019 Leslie Gelb. ‘I regard that as campaign rhetoric rather than serious policy.\u2019 ‘Wildly unrealistic campaign rhetoric,\u2019 scoffs The Washington Post editorial page. … <\/p>\n

‘Superficially, Obama\u2019s Iraq rhetoric makes his plan seem rather simpler than it is. His website states that Obama ‘will immediately begin to remove our troops from Iraq … and have all of our combat brigades out of Iraq within 16 months,” but it\u2019s not possible, and the libs are starting to figure it out. The bottom line is they have no intention of pulling out, and they got a secret plan, and it doesn\u2019t spell out so much secret plan; but I can tell you what the secret plan is, whether it\u2019s Hillary or Obama. Couple days after they\u2019re inaugurated, a week, whatever it is, they\u2019re going to suddenly discover that Bush had not told them the whole truth of the seriousness of the problem that we face — and Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi are going to say Bush lied, or he withheld information. ‘We didn\u2019t know how serious this was,\u2019 and they\u2019re going to become the biggest pro-war people in the world because they\u2019re going to want victory for themselves.
