RUSH: This is Becky in Salem, Oregon. Great to have you here, Becky. Hi.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Hi, Rush. It\u2019s a pleasure to speak to you.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Thank you. I can imagine.<\/p>\n

CALLER: I\u2019m a little nervous. I\u2019ve never done this before but I just wanted to share with you something I got in the mail the other day. I got a mini-audit from the IRS. My husband and I are always on time with our taxes. We are not part of the 47% who do not pay federal income taxes. (chuckles) We have always been on time and we just got this paper that we have got to (sigh) explain ourselves for the deductions we claimed on our taxes for 2007. So I\u2019m just a little confused and I\u2019m frustrated because I get this little sheet to telling me — single-spaced, full page — all of the items that they need in order for us to justify the deductions we took.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Are these Schedule C deductions?<\/p>\n

CALLER: I don\u2019t… Well, they just gave me a sheet and they checked off charitable giving, miscellaneous deductions.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Ah, that\u2019s schedule C.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Yeah. I don\u2019t know if it\u2019s just because of our tax bracket or what, but it\u2019s like (garbled).<\/p>\n

RUSH: No, I think… No, no, no, no. Well, it could be. I don\u2019t know what your income level is, but the IRS commissioner announced a renewed all-out effort on high-wealth people.<\/p>\n

CALLER: (groans)<\/p>\n

RUSH: We\u2019re talking multiple millionaire people who have an intricate business organization that could be, they say, rife for hiding money from our beloved government. Now, does that describe you?<\/p>\n

CALLER: Well, we\u2019ve had to dissolve some of our investments into CRTs just to make sure that our investments are not being taken advantage of.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Well, but you and your husband don\u2019t own multiple businesses in Bahamas and Bermuda and all that, right?<\/p>\n

CALLER: No, we\u2019re not. (giggles) No.<\/p>\n

RUSH: All right. So I think a computer probably just spit your return out, something in your return, deductions versus your gross and adjusted gross. A computer probably just spit it out and so you gotta deal with it. It\u2019s not a full-fledged audit. It doesn\u2019t sound like this is a harassment audit.<\/p>\n

CALLER: But it just seemed like, okay, here right in the midst of taxes. Our poor accountant probably going to hate us. Even last year we received some letters.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Is this the first time you\u2019ve been audited mini- or full or otherwise?<\/p>\n

CALLER: Yes, yes.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Oh, well. (laughing)<\/p>\n

CALLER: (laughing) Gonna get used to it?<\/p>\n

RUSH: (laughing) Oh, have you got a lot to learn!<\/p>\n

CALLER: We\u2019re still young. <\/p>\n

RUSH: Yes. Yeah. Well, this is not that big a deal compared to what they could do. <\/p>\n

CALLER: Yeah.<\/p>\n

RUSH: If all they\u2019re asking you to do is justify your deductions further, like your receipts. You\u2019ll have to provide them for every charitable donation you gotta provide them a letter from the charity acknowledging that you did make a donation. You can\u2019t just say, ‘I gave leukemia-lymphoma a thousand dollars.\u2019 If the computer spits your return out they\u2019re gonna want to see the letter —<\/p>\n

CALLER: Yeah.<\/p>\n

RUSH: — from the Leukemia-Lymphoma Society. So if you made charitable donations go get all those people to send you a letter the year that you made donation and verifying the amount. If you got a bunch of meal, entertainment C deductions — business entertainment and so forth — just produce the receipts.<\/p>\n

CALLER: I\u2019m thankful my husband is very good about being on track with that, but one one of our family members told us, ‘Hey, listen, why don\u2019t you also submit other deductions. I forgot these I didn\u2019t put them on my return to balance out,\u2019 if they don\u2019t accept our other deductions, because I know either way they\u2019re going to grab us up by our ankles and shake us out for some more money, but it\u2019s just frustrating.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Really? Yes!<\/p>\n

CALLER: (giggling) I\u2019m sorry. I\u2019m just angry. Every time we get my husband\u2019s paycheck, it\u2019s like he works so hard, and every year it just seems like more and more is being taken. I know it\u2019s normal, and I know I\u2019m probably saying the same thing millions of other people are saying. But, like (sighs), it just seems like it\u2019s never going to end. It\u2019s just frustrating. (giggles) Sorry.<\/p>\n

RUSH: It\u2019s like what\u2019s never going to end, taxes or the harassment? <\/p>\n

CALLER: Just that the increase of taxes with this whole health care thing.<\/p>\n

RUSH: You haven\u2019t even seen anything. You ain\u2019t, as they say, seen nothing yet.<\/p>\n

CALLER: I know.<\/p>\n

RUSH: I mean, starting next January, all the rates get bumped up. <\/p>\n

CALLER: Yeah.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Well, I\u2019m hearing conflicting talk that the Bush tax cuts in the middle class aren\u2019t going to be sunsetted.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Well, that\u2019s good.<\/p>\n

RUSH: But if you\u2019re in the 36% bracket, hello 39.6%. <\/p>\n

CALLER: Mmmm.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Then you add the state increases to that. A lot of people — the job creators, the entrepreneurs — are going to be facing a total income tax bite of over 50% when you factor in the states and Medicare, FICA, Social Security, and all of that. So it\u2019s… <\/p>\n

CALLER: (groans)<\/p>\n

RUSH: No, everybody\u2019s going to get socked. Everybody\u2019s going to get socked. By design. <\/p>\n

CALLER: (groans)<\/p>\n

RUSH: Look, the whole point here is to prevent upward mobility. The whole point is to prevent people like you from acquiring wealth.<\/p>\n

CALLER: (sighs) It\u2019s just maddening. It\u2019s just difficult to watch. (giggles)<\/p>\n

RUSH: Tell me about it. Tell me about it. Look, I\u2019ve been audited 12 years in a row by the state of New York. <\/p>\n

CALLER: (giggles)<\/p>\n

RUSH: When I moved outta there in 1997. I sent \u2019em three letters. ‘It\u2019s been fun for eight years but I\u2019m gone. I\u2019m not filing returns \u2019cause I\u2019m outta here,\u2019 and three years went by, four years went by and fine. Then I got a note. ‘You haven\u2019t filed returns since 1997.\u2019 That was five years at the time. ‘We need to see every bit of tax information and your federal tax return. We want to know when you were in New York, what days you worked in New York, and so forth.\u2019 <\/p>\n

CALLER: Wow.<\/p>\n

RUSH: I had to prove it. It took two years. I had to prove it to them 14 different ways, every day of those five years.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Yeah. It\u2019s amazing what they ask you to do.<\/p>\n

RUSH: You\u2019re lucky. You just got a computer-generated note saying justify your Schedule C.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Yeah. Okay, well, I\u2019ll count myself lucky.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Wait \u2019til you get a note demanding that you prove to them where you were 14 different ways in the tax year. <\/p>\n

CALLER: (giggles) Ohhh.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Wait \u2019til they say, ‘Which house do you really live in? Do you live in New York or Florida?\u2019 ‘I live in Florida.\u2019 ‘Well, we want to come see. We want to come see which of your houses is the more lived in.\u2019<\/p>\n

CALLER: Wow.<\/p>\n

RUSH: They can do it. You\u2019re guilty until proved innocent under tax law.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Wow. Well, thank you, Rush, for your help. At least it calms me down somewhat.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Aren\u2019t you glad you called?<\/p>\n

CALLER: (laughing) I was expecting you to give me some great insight into how to overcome this, but no.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Well, now, wait a second. <\/p>\n

CALLER: (giggling)<\/p>\n

RUSH: Okay, wait, wait, wait. How to overcome it?<\/p>\n

CALLER: I don\u2019t know! Maybe just to go, ‘Okay. I hear you.\u2019<\/p>\n

RUSH: Whoa, this is interesting. what were you expecting? This is… <\/p>\n

CALLER: Noooo. No. No. (giggling)<\/p>\n

RUSH: No, no, no. <\/p>\n

CALLER: (laughing)<\/p>\n

RUSH: There\u2019s nothing wrong here, Becky, there\u2019s no wrong answer. I\u2019m curious. <\/p>\n

CALLER: (laughing)<\/p>\n

RUSH: I have failed add host here —<\/p>\n

CALLER: No, no, no. (laughing)<\/p>\n

RUSH: — and I want to know what you were expecting, what kind of insight.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Oh, just that you gave me words of encouragement as I look at this explanation-of-items sheet that I can just overcome the government by sticking it to them and maybe have some pithy things to say back. I don\u2019t know. I love your show, and you just helped my husband and I just keep perspective on where things are at. So, no. You have not failed me as host.<\/p>\n

RUSH: I was trying to give you some encouragement by saying — <\/p>\n

CALLER: (giggling)<\/p>\n

RUSH: — it sounds like a computer spat this thing out.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Yeah.<\/p>\n

RUSH: It doesn\u2019t sound like you\u2019ve been targeted for anything.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Well, okay. Yes. So you haven\u2019t failed me as a host.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Yeah, but you have to deal with it.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Yeah.<\/p>\n

RUSH: I mean, you can\u2019t sit there and ignore it.<\/p>\n

CALLER: No, not at all. (giggles) Well, thank you, Rush. I\u2019m sorry that I —<\/p>\n

RUSH: Well, Geithner ignored it for a while, but then when he wanted to become secretary of the Treasury he had to pay the money back.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Well, exactly! That\u2019s what I\u2019m frustrated about!<\/p>\n

RUSH: Maybe you could say, ‘Go ahead, Becky and ignore it and when they come for you, say, ‘I don\u2019t want to be secretary of Treasury so I\u2019m not going to pay this,” and you might not owe anything after you go through the process here anyway. (laughing) I mean, there are all kinds of inspiring ideas I could give you. You said it\u2019s a mini-audit and from what you\u2019ve said, it sounds like it\u2019s a traditional, computer-generated thing that happens randomly. It doesn\u2019t sound like you\u2019ve been targeted for any reason. You\u2019ll know when that happens. You\u2019ll know when you\u2019ve been targeted.
