RUSH: Yesterday on the David Gregory podcast website… The David Gregory podcast website? Is this the guy that used to run Meet the Press? He\u2019s got a podcast? I\u2019ve seen him on CNN doing commentary. (interruption) And we found it? Well, I don\u2019t know. Anyway, Mitt Romney was there on the David Gregory podcast website (that\u2019s what I want to do when I grow up), and Gregory said to Romney, “Do you think that Republicans are headed to an open convention?” That\u2019s an incisive question. I\u2019m happy to be able to provide that for you. Here\u2019s Romney\u2019s answer…<\/p>\n

ROMNEY: I think that depends on whether or not Mr. Cruz and Mr. Kasich both stay in the race aggressively through California. I think. I think Cruz and Kasich divide the vote, if you will, and that would make it easier for Mr. Trump to win the winner-take-all congressional districts and the winner-take-all states and get the delegates he needs either to reach the 1,237 — or to get close enough to it that he could persuade the uncommitted delegates that he\u2019d need to get the victory on the first ballot. If it remains three candidates, I think Mr. Trump gets it on the first ballot.<\/p>\n

RUSH: “If it remains three,” meaning Kasich stays in. Of course, there\u2019s no question Cruz is staying in. What is this, Kasich or Cruz? Unless they drop out or what? So let\u2019s run through this. He says if Cruz — I\u2019m sorry, Mr. Cruz and Mr. “Kasich divide the vote, if you will, and that would make it easier for Mr. Trump to win the winner-take-all congressional districts and the winner-take-all states and get the delegates he needs either to reach the 1,237 — or to get close enough to it that he could persuade the uncommitted delegates that he\u2019d need to get the victory on the first ballot.”<\/line><\/p>\n

Now, what do you think Kasich would say if somebody said, “Did you hear what…?” I\u2019m sure this has happened. “Did you hear what Mitt Romney said? Mitt Romney said you staying in guarantees Trump wins!” Kasich would say, “No, no, no! I\u2019m the nominee. I\u2019m gonna the nominee. You watch.” People look at themselves and ask if there are any men in white coats nearby. Anyway, David Gregory had another question. He said, “Everybody keeps focusing on 1,237 as the magic number. But if Trump gets close — and he has the ability to work it a little bit, get some unbound delegates to go his way — then what?”<\/p>\n

ROMNEY: That\u2019s the nature of the process, and my guess is some delegates might like to fly around on Air Trump or perhaps get a membership to Mar-a-Lago. I think there\u2019s a lot of ways to be persuasive on the part of the people who are close. There will be quite a few uncommitted delegates that go to Cleveland, and being able to pick off 50 or a hundred of them is probably not beyond the possibility of a strong campaign.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Sounds like Mitt\u2019s kind of accepting the obvious and sounds kind of like it\u2019s gonna happen. Who was it, Rex Ryan? I just saw him, I guess, introduce Trump in upstate New York near Buffalo. (interruption) The Bills, yeah. But he did it. He said he was not acting as part of the Buffalo Bills.
