News of the initiative was published before the Arizona carnage, so there\u2019s no telling what current plans are, but Commerce Secretary Gary Locke claims the Internet ID will notbe a &#8220;government-controlled system&#8221; like a national ID card.<\/p>\n<p>White House Cybersecurity Coordinator Howard Schmidt says the Commerce Department is &#8220;the absolute perfect spot in the US government&#8221; to create an &#8220;identity ecosystem&#8221; for the Internet. What\u2019s an &#8220;identity ecosystem&#8221;? Who knows. We also don\u2019t know any details of the new policy, which won\u2019t be &#8220;a government-controlled system&#8221; &#8212; even though the government is planning it and it will be run by a government agency.<\/p>\n<p>The White House Cyber Czar said anonymity will remain &#8220;possible&#8221; on the Internet, and getting a government Internet ID will be voluntary; also, there\u2019s no chance &#8220;a centralized database will emerge.&#8221; (Yeah. Just like there was no chance the government would take over large swaths of the banking or automotive sectors.)<\/p>\n<p>This is the regime that lives by the motto, &#8220;Never let a serious crisis go to waste.&#8221; The mad ramblings of the Arizona gunman are posted all over the Internet, and the pathetic left is &#8212; predictably &#8211;blaming conservatives for the shootings.
