RUSH: I want to start, before we get into the serious stuff, and there\u2019s just way too much of that, grab audio sound bite number two. <\/p>\n

Yesterday I was having a little discussion<\/a>, just kind of a break from the heavy stuff about the new ways the San Francisco 49ers are gonna deal with their young Millennial team members. And one of the ways they\u2019re gonna do it, they\u2019re gonna reduce meeting times. <\/p>\n

They\u2019re gonna cut meeting times way back, and after the shortened meetings they\u2019re gonna give all the players a 10-minute break to go get their smartphone fix. So that they can Facebook, so that they can Instagram, so that they can tweet, so that they can go find out whose been Instagramming about them. So they can go find out who\u2019s been tweeting about them.<\/p>\n

Then after the 10-minute smartphone fix, it\u2019s back to the next meeting or back to the next on-field practice. And I made the observation that it isn\u2019t gonna be long before a player on game day — like a star running back scores a touchdown — heads back to the sideline, grabs his iPad or iPhone, gets a video of himself scoring and starts tweeing it out. I said we\u2019re gonna have the elimination, there\u2019s not gonna be any difference between the stage and the audience. <\/p>\n

And, lo and behold, it happened last night! It happened. It happened in Boston. Well, actually in Atlanta. The Boston Red Sox at Turner Field playing the Braves. Red Sox manager John Farrell spoke with reporters, because what happened was that the third baseman, Pablo Sandoval — I still do not understand, by the way, how it is physically possible for Pablo Sandoval to field a ground ball. Do you, Brian? But there he is, he\u2019s out there doing it. <\/p>\n

The Giants had a great World Series. He goes to Red Sox in free agency in the off season. He\u2019s playing third base for the Red Sox. He went to the bench and Instagrammed one of his great achievements during the game from the bench. I called it. I mean, I speculated it was gonna happen in the NFL. It happened in Major League Baseball last night. Here is the Red Sox manager.<\/line><\/p>\n

FARRELL: It\u2019s disappointing. It\u2019s disappointing because it\u2019s a rule that is known by all and, like I said, it\u2019s very disappointing. It\u2019s not tolerable and as a result he\u2019s on the bench tonight. The clubhouse is not one that has run amuck. This is an incident that I believe is isolated. And, like I said, my focus is to continue to do what we can to get better on the field each and every day.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Now, the Red Sox are in Kansas City for a weekend series starting tonight. And I\u2019ll tell you this is gonna open the floodgates. It\u2019s exactly what I was talking about yesterday. And it\u2019s not gonna be long before this is allowed and encouraged because they\u2019re not gonna be able to stop it. If a whole bunch of players — you can\u2019t suspend the whole team, and they can\u2019t suspend the starting lineup of the starting lineup endeavors to engage in this opportunity. And it\u2019s trending that way. <\/p>\n

I\u2019m just gonna tell you, as a performer, when you blur the line, when you obscure the difference in the stage and the audience, you are going to ruin whatever is on the stage, be it baseball, football, a play, a musical on Broadway. When the audience becomes part of what\u2019s happening on the stage, it\u2019s over. What\u2019s happening on the stage is going to cease being special, it\u2019s going to cease being unique. I don\u2019t expect most people to agree with that and I, frankly, don\u2019t expect a whole lot of people to understand it. <\/p>\n

But you watch, it isn\u2019t gonna be long before that\u2019s going to happen. And I\u2019ll tell you, the late arrivals to this are going to be broadcast TV and cable TV rights holders who telecast and broadcast these games, \u2019cause if a player, after accomplishing some great feat during the game can go to the sidelines and immediately tweet and post something about it with pictures and reruns, you\u2019re not gonna need a TV network to tell you what went on. The player is gonna do it himself and the fans are gonna be interacting.<\/line><\/p>\n

If they don\u2019t get a handle on this… I know people are saying, “Rush, it\u2019s change, and you can\u2019t stop change.” I know. I\u2019m just making a prediction.
