RUSH: Evansville, Indiana. This is Kelly. I’m glad you called. You’re next on the Rush Limbaugh program. Hi.

CALLER: Hi, Rush. Can you hear me?

RUSH: Yeah.

CALLER: I’m so excited to talk to you.

RUSH: Thank you.

CALLER: I am an Indiana voter, and I have three new teenagers that are gonna be voting this year. I’m letting my twins take the day off from school tomorrow to go to a Trump rally. I rely on you for my sanity. I listen to you every day so I can understand what’s going on out there. I listen to you for your leadership, your guidance. But, Rush, I’m really worried, and I think… I know we will never be able to talk you into running for president, but there’s one thing that you can do, and I think it’s time. We need you to stand up and lead us and tell us — I know you don’t want to, but I need, and we need. you to tell us — who to vote for, Cruz or Trump?

RUSH: Well, that would require me seriously to violate the policy that I’ve had since the beginning days of this program, and it’s rooted in so many things. One of those things is, I have utter, utmost respect for you being able to decide on your own based on what’s important to you. The other thing is, I don’t like to tie myself to candidates. I don’t like endorsing, ’cause I don’t control what they say from day to day. I don’t control what they believe. I don’t control what they do, and I just don’t want to assume responsibility.

I mean, I don’t want to tell you that somebody is the cat’s meow and then later find out that they’re not. It’s tough enough for me to stay on the straight and narrow without having to worry about somebody else doing it. But it raises another point. Do you know this this actually kind of it does surprise me a little bit. There are any number of places you can read on the internet, blogs and websites, who actually think that the reason Ted Cruz is not winning everything is because conservative media hasn’t aligned behind him.

As though it’s my fault and other people’s fault. And we’re not running! That’s what boggles my mind. Folks, I’m not trying to be in any way falsely humble here. It just… I’m not running! I’m not in charge of Cruz’s campaign. I haven’t one thing to say about his strategy, the way he’s going about this. The idea that he would be doing better if I had been in the stable from the get-go? I don’t know. I guess it’s what some people think, but it honestly does surprise me.

And Kelly, I’m not evading you. I’m not. I’m not. This is not a new position for me. I could tell you to follow the Buckley Rule, and that is: “Vote for the most conservative candidate who can win in the general election.” That’s the Buckley Rule. (interruptin) That’s the point! I’m not hiding behind anything! You vote for the most conservative candidate who can win in the general. That’s what you do. When you don’t have somebody that you’re already wedded to, that’s how you decide.
