News Producers Do the Real Work

by Rush Limbaugh - Sep 16,2004

Well, the reason why didn’t they show up at the last time was because it wasn’t close enough to the election. They show up now because it’s close enough to the election and the Democrats are panicked and it’s time to pull out all the stops. This is where you take the risk of your life in order to bring down a sitting president that you hate. You’ve tried this story four previous times, the National Guard story, you’ve tried Michael Moore using it, calling Bush a deserter, that didn’t work. You have Terry McAuliffe out there saying Bush is AWOL and a liar, that didn’t work. So now you pull out all the stops, you go for broke, you throw for the Hail Mary touchdown, you go for the forged document answer to every question CBS has been asking story, and it comes in two months before the election, hubba hubba. This was gonna be it, and instead what’s happened is it’s made CBS the story.

Do you know what else is coming to light here, folks? This is totally unrelated to the specifics of the story but it’s how news is put together. Do you know who the reporter on this story really is? It’s not Rather. It’s Mary Mapes. If you want to know the dirty little secret of how 60 Minutes and Primetime Live and all these shows work — these reporters are not all over the country asking questions. They eventually make the trip and talk. All of the work and some of the actual questions that are going to be asked by the reporter are asked by the producer who’s out there doing all the work. The reporter shows up in the last stages of the story to actually do the sit-down. The point I’m making is that it’s an amazing division of power, and the people that are actually doing the legwork and doing the “reporting” are people you never see. They’re not on camera, and they’re not nearly as highly paid as the people who are on camera.
I can give you an example personally when 60 Minutes profiled me. There was a producer who spent months with me, a producer who traveled on a cruise with me. The producer was everywhere. The reporter who did the story came in for two sessions of 45 minutes each with questions on a piece of paper the producer had given him, and one of his questions was, “Tell me about Rio Linda.” He had no clue. He had no clue whatsoever when he asked the question. Oh, yeah, they turned the air-conditioning off so you start sweating. They claim it’s the noise. All kinds of tricks.
So everybody is focusing on Rather, and the buck stops with him, don’t misunderstand. I’m just telling you how news is put together, how the sausage is made. There are a lot of people that are doing all this that you never, ever see and frankly, those are the people here whose, you know, reputations, internally, are under assault as well that we’re not hearing about. And, of course, Rather is being given great credit for being the fall guy and taking all the heat and so forth. Well, that may be publicly, but I’ll guarantee you if somebody inside gave him a bum steer, they’re hearing about it. We’re not, but they are.

BREAK TRANSCRIPT

RUSH: Let’s not forget one other episode at CBS, also related to an attempt to discredit anybody and anything having to do with the Vietnam War. They did a series of reports on General William Westmoreland that he sued them over. And he took them to the cleaners. There was an out-of-court settlement, so large that CBS lost their libel insurance. And that settlement, that story, resulted, supposedly, in new guidelines at CBS to prevent anything like that from happening again. (Laughing.) Right. Must have been under previous management, which it was.

But Westmoreland was fit to be tied, he said, like Bill Donovan, the labor secretary, “Where do I go to get my reputation back?” And that was not Rather, but it was CBS. That was far worse than this, in terms of the financial impact. Well, that may be hard to measure, what with their ratings plummeting at CBS.
