On Tuesday, the City Council of Berkeley, California will vote on a resolution declaring Private First Class Bradley Manning an American hero. A city commission has already approved the measure.

Private Manning, as you probably know, is the soldier suspected of downloading a massive dump of classified data –and turning it over to the leaking twerp, Juilian Assange of WikiLeaks. Bob Meola (get this), the City Peace and Justice Commissioner for Berkeley, is the sponsor of the resolution. He told The San Francisco Chronicle that if Manning did “what he’s accused of doing, he’s a patriot and should get a medal.”

The prospect of Manning being cited as a hero has appalled veterans groups, who say Berkeley’s council would be “wise” to vote the measure down — butManning has other supporters. Jeff Paterson, an organizer of the Bradley Manning Support Network, also calls the suspect a hero, and says he is “hopeful” the resolution will pass.

Mr. Meola: Why just honor one private? You should amend your resolution to honor all the “heroes” you cherish. Don’t be exclusionary. Add Robert Hanssen, the notorious cold-war spy,who up until now was considered to have engineered our worst intelligence disaster. And why not recognize Iva D’Aquino, better known as Tokyo Rose?By all means, go all the way!Declare January 14 a citywide holiday, to honor the birthday of the greatest American hero in American history –Benedict Arnold.

Remember, sir: anything worth doing is worth doing right. Or, in your case, left. Heh-heh-heh!
