RUSH: A story yesterday that you just don’t believe and it just rips your heart out and then makes you mad. “According to a new report, 47 percent of Detroiters are ‘functionally illiterate.'” You think this is progress? Snerdley is saying, “Hey, that’s progress. Don’t put it down.” “The alarming new statistics were released by the Detroit Regional Workforce Fund on Wednesday. … ‘Not able to fill out basic forms, for getting a job — those types of basic everyday (things). Reading a prescription; what’s on the bottle, how many you should take… just your basic everyday tasks,'” 47% of the city can’t do. “I don’t really know how they get by, but they do. Are they getting by well? Well, that’s another question,” said the Fund’s director, Karen Tyler-Ruiz, who explained what it means when you can’t read. Did you know what it means when you couldn’t read? I wouldn’t have known if it weren’t for Karen Tyler-Ruiz explaining it.

Now, I have a solution. We here at the EIB Network, we have a solution. And, by the way, don’t forget, Detroit just closed half of its schools ’cause they couldn’t make a better deal with the teachers union. Remember that? Mayor Dave Bing couldn’t make a better deal with teachers union. I do remember this. I remember I caught hell for pointing this out. It was shortly before, during, or after the Porkulus bill being signed. You’ll remember this, too. The regime was going to pass out vouchers all over the country to get access to rent free apartments or rent assisted something, affordable type housing. And you had to show up at the city hall or somewhere to apply for a chance. There weren’t nearly enough vouchers to accommodate everybody that showed up. So what you were applying for was essentially to be put in a drawing and then win, something like that.

The point is not everybody who showed up was gonna get the relief. And they were overwhelmed, the city hall or wherever this took place, they were overwhelmed. And our man in Detroit, a radio reporter extraordinaire, WJR, went out there — we played the audio and asked these people what this was all about. Maybe Cookie can find this before the program ends because I can only remember specifically, but he asked, “Well, where do you think this money is coming from?” “Obama! It’s coming from Obama’s stash. Obama’s doing this for us. Obama!” And I remember saying, “If I were president and this was going on, I would be embarrassed.” Well, folks, I have a solution. Something that I don’t think anybody has had the guts, maybe not even the thought to try.

Forty-seven percent of people in Detroit can’t read. What we ought to do is get a lot of money and just throw it at the Detroit public school system ’cause obviously we’re not spending enough money here. I mean when you’ve got 47% of a city that can’t read, what we need to do is make more investments. I can’t believe somebody hasn’t come up with this before now. Must everything be up to me? But we need to spend money in Detroit. We need more federal funds. We need more state funds. We need more private donations. We’re not spending enough money. Forty-seven percent can’t read? It’s obviously a money problem, isn’t it?

RUSH: Okay. Here it is. We got the audio from Detroit of model citizens lining up for money from Obama’s stash. By the way, I bet the 47% in Detroit who can’t read do know the letter (D) for Democrat on a ballot. I’ll bet you the 47% who can’t read do know what (D) means. All right. This is our reporter, Ken Rogulski of WJR, and this is at Cobo Hall. A bunch of people lined up for what Detroit Free Press described this way: “Cobo a Scene of Desperation — Social service agencies are bracing for more troubles.

“The economic tsunami washing over metro Detroit swept its casualties to the doors of Cobo Center on Wednesday in the form of 35,000 people so desperate for help with mortgage and utility bills that threats were made, fights broke out and people were nearly trampled. … City officials said a total of about 65,000 people over the past few days have gotten applications — due next Wednesday — for a share of $15.2 million in federal stimulus money…” Not all 65,000 were gonna get money but that’s how many showed up. Only 3500 were going to get help out of the 65,000. Ken Rogulski went down and talked to some of the people in line at Cobo Center.

ROGULSKI: Why are you here?

WOMAN #1: To get some money.

ROGULSKI: What kind of money?

WOMAN #1: Obama money.

ROGULSKI: Where’s it coming from?

WOMAN #1: Obama.

ROGULSKI: And where did Obama get it?

WOMAN #1: I don’t know, his stash. I don’t know. (laughter) I don’t know where he got it from, but he givin’ it to us, to help us.

WOMAN #2: And we love him.

WOMAN #1: We love him. That’s why we voted for him!

WOMEN: (chanting) Obama! Obama! Obama! (laughing)

RUSH: It’s coming from Obama. Obama’s stash. He’s giving it to us. He loves us; we love him.

I said at the time, “If I were…” and it was from the stash! It was a slush fund. This is exactly what it was for, and did I catch hell (even in Detroit), ’cause I said, “You know, if I were president, this would embarrass me — this happening in America when I was president. But Obama is sitting in Washington and this is exactly what he wanted. ‘It’s me!’ Everybody coming tomorrow for their little morsels in life.”

RUSH: I just got an e-mail from a subscriber Rush 24/7 about why 47% cannot read in Detroit. “Rush: The percentage went up when all those who could read saw the handwriting on the wall and left town.” (laughing) So the ones who could read got out (laughing) ’cause they saw the handwriting on the wall. (laughing) Oh, jeez!
