VARNEY: He’s a socialist. This speaks volumes about the reality of socialism today. It’s all about elitism. You see, they are so much smarter than us. From the top down, they know what’s best for us. They know how to command society, to be more fair. Nonsense. Socialism in Europe has delivered mass unemployment and bankruptcy. It will do the same here if we let it. What socialism does is maintain the status quo. Capitalism upsets the applecart by rewarding individual talent. Socialists today are often rich. Dominique Strauss-Kahn stays in $3,000-a-night hotel suites and owns lavish homes around the world. He knows what’s best for us?
RUSH: Yeah, and he’s not paying a dime of his own money for any of it. We are the IMF, right? We are the World Bank. All of these guys live and siphon what we do. And this hard-core socialist, note that this guy is more than happy to stay in a $3,000-a-night suite, spending other people’s money. A lot of it is American taxpayer money. You know, at 3,000 bucks we almost could excuse the guy for thinking the maid was included. I don’t know, something about this Dominique Strauss-Kahn guy reminds me of Pepe LePew. Everything about this guy reminds me of Pepe Le Pew.

RUSH: Eugene Robinson, who, again, his column today begins, “It’s almost enough to give socialism a bad name.” It’s a piece about Dominique Strauss-Kahn, who heads the IMF. “We don’t know whether Dominique Strauss-Kahn — who heads the International Monetary Fund and, until a few days ago, was likely to be the Socialist Party candidate for president of France — is guilty of the alleged sexual assault for which he was arrested. Like anyone, he is presumed innocent until court proceedings prove otherwise. We do know, however, that at the time of the reported incident on Saturday, Strauss-Kahn was resident in a $3,000-a-night luxury suite at a posh Midtown Manhattan hotel. We also know that when he was taken into police custody hours later, aboard a Paris-bound jetliner that was moments from takeoff at John F. Kennedy International Airport, police found him comfortably ensconced in the first-class cabin. I didn’t think this was how socialists were supposed to roll.”
“The tinge of opulent decadence that colors the whole episode would seem, at first impression, to cast a dishonorable light upon powerful, unaccountable, jet-setting international bureaucrats in general, with perhaps a special spotlight of shame for the French-intellectual variety. But Strauss-Kahn, who is based at IMF headquarters in Washington, was apparently in New York on private business. It is conceivable that he and his peers, while carrying out their official duties on behalf of humanity, make due with hotel rooms costing less per night than most workers of the world earn in a year.” It’s conceivable? My God, folks. He wrote a whole column on this. He wrote a whole column on his shock at the way Dominique Strauss-Kahn lived. It gives socialism a bad name, that’s right. How about the World Economic Forum at Davos? Unbelievable.
